US vs UK Safari Operators 2026: How They Differ and Which Suits You

By Richard Jasinski·Updated 10 October 2026

Neither a US-based nor a UK-based safari operator is better across the board. They differ in three ways: how your money is protected, how prices are published, and when the balance is due. UK operators work under a statutory protection scheme and publish licence numbers; US operators work without one, and mostly publish real prices for private trips. This page compares eleven planners, five American and six British, on those three points and says which suits which traveller. It does not rank the eleven against each other on those three points; the US-based safari companies are ranked separately below, by the score on each one’s review.

Should you book a safari with a US-based or a UK-based operator?

Choose on the trip, then check the money. A UK operator gives you a licence number to verify; a US operator more often gives you a real price for a private trip and a team on your time zone. A traveller in either country can book with either.

UK-based operators

Protection: statutory. A company selling flight-inclusive packages must hold an ATOL licence, and ABTOT or similar bonds cover land-only trips. All six here publish a number.

Prices: usually a from-price, often for the cheapest departure. Three of the six set the deposit on the individual quotation, and one publishes no prices at all.

Balance: due 56 to 112 days before travel.

US-based operators

Protection: no federal scheme exists, so it depends on the company: a USTOA membership, a state registration, or how client money is held. Ask, and pay the deposit by credit card.

Prices: more often a real per-person price for a private or hosted trip, in dollars.

Balance: due about 120 days before travel at four of the five.

The difference is the law, not the companies. ATOL is a legal requirement in the United Kingdom. The United States has nothing equivalent; what exists is voluntary, such as USTOA’s $1 Million Travelers Assistance Programme and a few state seller-of-travel registrations. An American company without a licence number is not breaking a rule or hiding one. It does mean the buyer has to ask the question a British buyer can look up.

Which safari operator is best for what

  • Best if you want a licence number you can check: any of the six British planners. Audley Travel, Wild Frontiers and Scott Dunn each name two or three schemes.
  • Best for a private trip with the price up front: Extraordinary Journeys Partner prices every itinerary, with safaris from USD 10,000 per person. Yellow Zebra Safaris and Scott Dunn do the same in pounds.
  • Best for a fully hosted safari: Micato Safaris, trading since 1966, prices eleven of thirteen safaris from USD 20,700. Abercrombie & Kent is the other hosted house and has a USTOA membership.
  • Best if you want to hold your money longest: Audley Travel, balance due 56 days out, then Wild Frontiers at 70.
  • Best published payment schedule: Wild Frontiers, 30 per cent down and the balance at 70 days, both printed.
  • Largest independent review record: Audley Travel (4.9 from 5,010 on Trustpilot) and Yellow Zebra Safaris (4.9 from 1,728). Micato has 755 Google reviews at 5.0.
  • Best for UK travellers on a first safari: Audley Travel or Yellow Zebra Safaris.
  • Best for US travellers on a first safari: Micato for a hosted trip, Extraordinary Journeys for a private one.

Which are the best US-based safari companies in 2026?

Ranked by the score on each company’s review on this site, the best US-based safari companies in 2026 are Micato Safaris (88/100), Abercrombie & Kent (86) and Extraordinary Journeys (84), followed by ROAR AFRICA (75), Deeper Africa (68), Big Five Tours & Expeditions (66), African Portfolio (65), Rothschild Safaris (60), Piper & Heath (45) and Ker & Downey World Travel (28). Abercrombie & Kent counts here for its American company, A&K USA in Illinois, as in the comparison above. Eight are scored on the safari review criteria, which weigh first-hand African expertise and do not score financial protection; A&K and Ker & Downey World Travel are scored on the company record, which does. That is why the protection column matters: only A&K names a scheme a US buyer can check, its USTOA membership.

Scores are re-read from each review on 10 October 2026; the facts are as read for each review, on the date shown. Extraordinary Journeys is a paid partner of this site; it ranks third on its review score, by the same rule as the other nine, and no partner can buy a score or a place. For the UK-based planners compared on this page, see the safari planner index.

Which safari operators are bonded or protected if they go bust?

Seven of the eleven publish a scheme with a reference you can check in a public register: the six British planners and Abercrombie & Kent. The other four are American and named no scheme in their terms; one has since said how it holds client money.

UK planners first, then US, each in alphabetical order. Booking conditions and registers read on 21 September 2026. Verify any ATOL number at the CAA’s ATOL holder checker; how to verify a safari operator sets out the other checks.

Abercrombie & Kent shows how much corporate structure matters. Its United Kingdom entity holds ATOL 2881 and ABTA membership V6398; its American entity appears on the USTOA active member list. A client booking the same safari through the London office and the American office is protected by two different things. Trustpilot is mostly a British habit: several American houses collect reviews on Google instead (Micato 755, ROAR AFRICA 269 and Extraordinary Journeys 179, all at 5.0). Our safari operator review index reads every platform.

Every published price, and what it buys

The lowest British figure is GBP 2,950 and the lowest American safari figure is USD 10,000, but they are not the same product: the first is a group tour without flights, the second a private trip. The itinerary is printed beside every number.

British planners publish the cheapest thing on the shelf: Wild Frontiers’ GBP 2,950 buys ten days in Ghana without flights. American planners mostly publish a real price for a private or hosted trip: Micato’s USD 20,700 is ten days in Tanzania. Extraordinary Journeys’ USD 8,000 is a Marrakech getaway; its lowest safari is an eleven-day family trip to Kenya at USD 10,000. Three rules before booking a safari from either country

  1. Ask which legal entity is taking the money. Abercrombie & Kent’s London company and its American company protect a deposit in different ways for the same trip.
  2. Ask how your payment is protected, and get the answer in writing. From a British company, a licence number you can check. From an American one, a USTOA membership, a state registration, or a statement of how client money is held.
  3. Ask for the deposit percentage and the balance date in the first email. Five of eleven publish no deposit figure and one publishes no balance date.

What changed for safari planners in 2026

Wild Frontiers took a BGF growth investment in June 2026 and remains ATOL 5975. Yellow Zebra Safaris has been part of Wilderness since early 2021, so one of the six British planners is owned by a camp group it books. Aardvark Safaris moved to employee ownership in 2025. Scott Dunn has been owned by Flight Centre Travel Group since January 2023. For the wider field see the safari planner index and the luxury tour operator power rankings.

Questions readers ask

Should I book a safari with a US-based or a UK-based operator?

Neither is better across the board; they differ in three ways. UK operators must protect flight-inclusive packages under the statutory ATOL scheme, and all six assessed here publish a licence number you can check. US operators work without a federal equivalent, so protection depends on what each company does and says. US operators tend to publish real prices for private trips in dollars; UK operators tend to publish a low from-price. And US operators here ask for the balance about 120 days out, against 56 to 112 days in the UK. Choose on the trip you want, then ask each company what protects your payment.

Which safari operators are bonded or financially protected if they go bust?

Of the eleven US and UK planners assessed, seven publish a scheme with a reference you can check: Audley Travel (ATOL 4817, ABTOT 5297), Wild Frontiers (ATOL 5975, ABTOT 5228), Scott Dunn (ATOL 2471, ABTOT 5222), Yellow Zebra Safaris (ATOL 10614), Journeys by Design (ATOL 9680), Aardvark Safaris (ATOL 5356, ABTOT 5704) and Abercrombie & Kent (ATOL 2881 and ABTA V6398 through its UK company, USTOA in the United States). Micato Safaris, Extraordinary Journeys, Ker & Downey and ROAR AFRICA named no scheme in their terms when read on 21 September 2026; Extraordinary Journeys has since said client payments are held in a separate account from its operating funds.

Is a US safari operator's deposit protected?

There is no statutory scheme in the United States like ATOL in the United Kingdom, so it depends on the company. Of the five American planners assessed, Abercrombie & Kent holds a USTOA membership. Micato Safaris, Extraordinary Journeys and Ker & Downey named no scheme in their terms when read on 21 September 2026, and ROAR AFRICA publishes no booking terms. Ask how client money is held, pay the deposit by credit card, and check whether your travel insurance covers supplier default.

Which are the best safari companies for UK travellers, and for US travellers?

For UK travellers who want everything priced and protected, Audley Travel prices every itinerary, holds ATOL 4817 and ABTOT 5297 and asks for the balance 56 days out; Wild Frontiers publishes the clearest payment schedule. For US travellers, Micato Safaris prices eleven of thirteen hosted safaris from USD 20,700, Extraordinary Journeys prices every private itinerary, with safaris from USD 10,000, and Abercrombie & Kent is the one American planner here with a published scheme behind the money.

Which US safari companies compare with Micato Safaris?

Of the American planners assessed here, Abercrombie & Kent is the closest in model: hosted trips, a 25 per cent deposit and the balance 120 days out, with a USTOA membership. Extraordinary Journeys plans private trips and prices every itinerary on its listing. ROAR AFRICA prices five of six trips from USD 23,850. Ker & Downey publishes no price. Micato itself prices eleven of thirteen safaris from USD 20,700.

What is ATOL and does it cover a safari?

ATOL is the Civil Aviation Authority's Air Travel Organiser's Licence, a statutory United Kingdom scheme protecting money paid for flight-inclusive package holidays. A safari booked with flights through an ATOL holder is covered; the same safari booked land-only usually is not, which is why several of these companies also hold ABTOT bonding, which covers non-flight packages. Every ATOL number on this page can be checked against the CAA's own register in under a minute.

Which safari planners publish their prices?

Four of the eleven price every itinerary on their listing: Audley Travel, Scott Dunn, Yellow Zebra Safaris and Extraordinary Journeys. Micato prices eleven of thirteen and ROAR AFRICA five of six. Ker & Downey and Journeys by Design publish no price on any itinerary. Wild Frontiers prices its group tours and not its tailor-made trips. Abercrombie & Kent's site could not be read at all.

Are British safari companies cheaper than American ones?

Their published entry prices are far lower, but they are not measuring the same thing. The lowest published British figure is GBP 2,950 per person for a ten-day Ghana group tour, land only; the lowest American safari figures are USD 10,000 for an eleven-day private family trip to Kenya and USD 20,700 for a ten-day hosted Tanzania safari. British houses publish the cheapest thing they sell, often a group departure without flights. American houses publish a real price for a private trip. The gap is mostly product, not margin.

How long do safari planners hold your money before you travel?

Between 56 and 120 days. Audley Travel asks for the balance 56 days before departure, Wild Frontiers 70, Scott Dunn and Yellow Zebra 90, Aardvark Safaris 91, Journeys by Design 112, and Micato Safaris, Ker & Downey, Abercrombie & Kent and Extraordinary Journeys all at or about 120, which is four months. ROAR AFRICA publishes no balance date at all.

Which are the best US-based safari companies in 2026?

Micato Safaris (88), Abercrombie & Kent (86) and Extraordinary Journeys (84), ranked by the score on each company's review on this site, followed by ROAR AFRICA (75), Deeper Africa (68), Big Five Tours & Expeditions (66), African Portfolio (65), Rothschild Safaris (60), Piper & Heath (45) and Ker & Downey World Travel (28). Micato runs fully hosted safaris with its own Safari Directors; A&K's American company is a USTOA member; Extraordinary Journeys, a paid partner of this site, prices every private itinerary from USD 10,000.
