Abercrombie & Kent vs Micato vs Ker & Downey 2026: Three Heritage Safari Operators Scored and Compared

By Richard Jasinski·Updated 7 September 2026

Of the three heritage names, Micato is the best safari operator on the evidence (88/100), Abercrombie & Kent the best when the safari is one leg of a wider journey or you want owned camps (81/100), and Ker & Downey the name to be most careful with (64/100 for Ker & Downey Africa), because it is now three separate companies, in Cape Town, Maun and Houston, that share a 1946 lineage and little else. On price, the only like-for-like pairing that can be sourced puts Micato's twelve-day Kenya and Tanzania classic at USD 25,000 per person against USD 13,495 for A&K's; Ker & Downey Africa publishes no prices, and Ker & Downey Botswana's rate sheet is a PDF this review could not read. The earlier version of this page carried per-day figures for all three without a source; they are withdrawn.

Which is the best of Abercrombie & Kent, Micato and Ker & Downey?

Micato, for a safari: the cleanest review record of the three, the most complete hosted model and published prices. Abercrombie & Kent, for reach and owned camps: 100 countries, Sanctuary Retreats, and the 2025 World Travel Awards' World's Leading Luxury Safari Company title. Ker & Downey has the oldest name, but the name is now carried by three companies, and the one most readers mean, Ker & Downey Africa in Cape Town, publishes no prices and has one current review platform.

The three are grouped together because their names predate the modern safari industry. Donald Ker and Syd Downey founded Ker & Downey Safaris in Kenya in 1946; Geoffrey Kent's family started Abercrombie & Kent in Nairobi in 1962; Felix and Jane Pinto founded Micato in 1966. Sixty years on, only Micato is still the company that was founded: A&K is a global group majority-owned since 2019 by Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio's Heritage Group, and the Ker & Downey name is used by a Botswana camp owner trading "since 1968" a Cape Town tailor-made operator founded in 2012, and a Houston travel designer of forty years' standing.

What that means for a buyer is that "heritage" is not the comparison to make. The comparison is the one every operator on this site is scored on: who is on the ground, what the public record shows, how prices are published, what the service model is, and who owns the company. On those, the table above is the answer, and the specialist vs booking direct page explains why the lodge rate underneath all three is the same.

Which Ker & Downey is which?

Three companies. Ker & Downey Botswana (kerdowneybotswana.com) is a Maun-based owner of Okavango camps, Kanana, Shinde, Okuti, Dinaka and others, trading since 1968 and expanding into Zambia. Ker & Downey Africa (ker-downeyafrica.com, with a hyphen) is a Cape Town tailor-made operator founded in 2012 covering twelve destinations. Ker & Downey (kerdowney.com) is a family-owned travel designer near Houston, Texas, covering the world. Check which one your quote is from.

Three unrelated "Ker & Downey" listings also share SafariBookings' search results, which the review evidence index documents as a trap.

Micato three, A&K three, Ker & Downey one. The earlier version of this page had them level at two each, on the strength of a Ker & Downey "from USD 800 a night" figure that could not be sourced.

Which is the most affordable?

Abercrombie & Kent, on the sourced evidence: its 12-day Kenya & Tanzania Wildlife Safari was listed at USD 13,495 per person for 2025, about USD 1,125 a day, against USD 25,000 for Micato's 12-day Heart of Kenya & Tanzania in 2026, about USD 2,080 a day with internal flights, fees, a Safari Director and tips inside. Ker & Downey Africa publishes no prices; the earlier claim on this page that Ker & Downey starts "from about USD 800 per person per night" could not be sourced and is withdrawn.

Read 7 September 2026. Per-day figures are this site's arithmetic. The A&K figure is a 2025 departure on a reseller's page because abercrombiekent.com could not be read for this review; confirm 2026 pricing with A&K. Micato's price includes internal flights, park fees, a Safari Director and gratuities; A&K's listing includes meals, lodges, drives, transfers and a Tour Director. International flights are extra on all.

To read the gap fairly, use the what a safari costs by budget ladder: A&K's small-group figure sits at the premium tier with fees and flights added, Micato's at the ultra tier fully loaded, and a Ker & Downey Botswana camp, if you obtain the rate sheet, will be a per-night lodge rate to which park fees and flights must be added. The Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania cost pages give those fee lines; the operator price comparison puts twelve operators on one ladder.

If you are considering Ker & Downey Africa, the practical step is to ask for three referees who travelled in the past twelve months; a company with 140 five-star reviews will have no trouble producing them, and the newest public review is a year old. The how to verify a safari operator page has the rest of the check, and the deposit and payment terms guide covers protecting the money once you have chosen.

Straight answers to the questions readers ask

Which is the oldest safari operator, Abercrombie & Kent, Micato or Ker & Downey?

The Ker & Downey name is oldest: Donald Ker and Syd Downey founded Ker & Downey Safaris in Kenya in 1946. Abercrombie & Kent followed in Nairobi in 1962 and Micato in 1966. But the Ker & Downey name is now used by three separate companies, and the Cape Town operator most readers mean, Ker & Downey Africa, was founded in 2012.

Is Ker & Downey one company?

No. Ker & Downey Botswana, in Maun, owns Okavango camps and has traded since 1968; Ker & Downey Africa, in Cape Town, is a tailor-made operator founded in 2012; and Ker & Downey, near Houston, is a family-owned travel designer covering the world. On 7 September 2026 the unhyphenated kerdowneyafrica.com redirected to the Botswana company; the Cape Town operator is at ker-downeyafrica.com. Check which one your contract is with.

Which has the best service?

Micato, on the evidence: a Safari Director travels with every party from arrival to departure, gratuities are inside the price, and its 751 Google reviews at 5.0 name the director more than the camps. Abercrombie & Kent hosts its small-group journeys with a Tour Director; Ker & Downey Africa sells private bespoke trips without a stated hosted model.

Which owns its own lodges?

Abercrombie & Kent owns Sanctuary Retreats, camps and river boats in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana, Zambia and Egypt. Ker & Downey Botswana owns its Okavango and Kalahari camps, but the Cape Town-based Ker & Downey Africa does not. Micato owns none by design and selects third-party camps for each itinerary.

Which is the most affordable?

Abercrombie & Kent, on the sourced evidence: USD 13,495 per person for a 12-day small-group Kenya and Tanzania safari (2025 listing), about USD 1,125 a day, against USD 25,000 for Micato's 12-day classic with flights, fees and tips inside. Ker & Downey Africa publishes no prices, and the "from USD 800 a night" figure formerly on this page could not be sourced and is withdrawn.

Which has the best reviews?

Micato: 751 Google reviews at 5.0, newest 3 September 2026, scoring 88/100 on this site's review evidence index. Abercrombie & Kent: 780 Trustpilot reviews at 4.4 with 11% one-star, scoring 69. Ker & Downey Africa: 140 SafariBookings reviews at 5.0, newest September 2025, with nothing current elsewhere, scoring 51.

Which does the most philanthropy?

Micato's is the most visible: AmericaShare, its Nairobi non-profit, schools one child for every guest through the One-for-One Commitment, funded inside the trip price, and most guests visit. Abercrombie & Kent runs A&K Philanthropy across its destinations. Ker & Downey Africa's community ties are at camp level and not published as a programme.

Can I book any of the three through Uncompromised Travel?

No. None of the three runs an affiliate programme this site is part of, so this page earns nothing on a booking with any of them. To compare a proposal against an independent price for the same lodges, get an itemised quote from Go2Africa, a platform comparison on Safari.com, or priced trips on BookAllSafaris; those three are affiliate links and are labelled as such.
None of Abercrombie & Kent, Micato Safaris or Ker & Downey is bookable through this site, and none had input into this page; nothing here earns on a trip with any of them. This page contains no affiliate links. All three are scored against the same published criteria as every other operator reviewed here. Partners are labelled.
