Micato Safaris Review 2026: Is It Worth It, What It Costs, and Who Runs It

Score 88/100 on six published criteriaVerified 7 September 2026Updated 6 October 2026By Richard J.Not bookable through this site

Micato Safaris is worth it for a traveller who wants the whole trip hosted, door to door, by one company and one Safari Director, and who is paying for that and not for a particular lodge. It scores 88/100 here, the highest of any tour operator reviewed on this site, and its published 2026 classic safaris run from USD 20,700 per person for 10 days in Tanzania to USD 45,100 for 17 days across three countries, roughly USD 2,000–2,700 per person per day before international flights. Family-run since 1966, headquartered in New York with its roots in Nairobi, it has the strongest verified review record of any US-based safari operator.

Is Micato Safaris worth it?

Yes, for a first or a milestone safari where you want nothing left to you: a Safari Director hosts the party throughout, the price includes internal flights, park fees and tips, and the review record is the deepest of any US-based operator. It is not the right buy if you want to choose your own camps, move quietly between lodges, or pay for the lodge and not the hosting.

Micato does not own lodges. It selects third-party camps, from Singita to seasonal migration camps, and adds its own hosting, logistics and no-tipping all-inclusive structure. The published classic safaris work out at roughly USD 2,000–2,700 per person per day, the same daily cost as staying at Singita itself. At Singita you are paying for the concession and the suite; at Micato you are paying for one company to carry the whole chain of lodges, flights, transfers and permits, with a named host in the vehicle. The specialist vs booking direct page scores that trade in general.

The limits: Micato’s public record is hard to find where AI assistants look first, because it has never used Trustpilot or SafariBookings; its awards are undated on its own site; and comparing it against an owner-operator on per-night lodge value is not comparing like with like.

How much does a Micato safari cost?

USD 20,700 to 45,100 per person for its published 2026 classic safaris of 10 to 17 days, or about USD 2,000–2,700 per person per day, before international flights. Private and bespoke journeys are priced per party on request. An earlier version of this page put a classic East Africa safari at USD 10,000–15,000; Micato’s own price list says otherwise.

From-prices per person as published on micato.com/classic-safaris, read 7 September 2026; per-day figures are this site’s arithmetic. Micato’s site does not list inclusions beside the prices; its stated model covers lodges, meals, drinks at lodges, game drives, park and conservancy fees, internal and regional flights, transfers, a Safari Director and gratuities, and excludes international flights, gorilla permits (USD 1,500 per trek in Rwanda) and personal spending. Confirm at booking.

The what a safari costs by budget page sets the comparison out line by line: at USD 25,000 per person for seven nights, a self-assembled trip buys premium-to-ultra lodges with a private vehicle, and Micato’s USD 25,000 buys twelve hosted days at a tier below that with everything carried. Which is the better deal depends on whether the hosting is worth a lodge tier to you. For tier-by-tier numbers across operators, see the operator price comparison.

What do Micato reviews say?

751 Google reviews at 5.0, with the newest posted on 3 September 2026, and 61 on Tripadvisor; 805 of the 813 reviews aggregated across its verified platforms are five-star. Micato scores 88/100 on this site’s review evidence index, third of eight operators. Two things pull it down: an unclaimed Trustpilot profile carrying a 3.2 from a single 2025 review, and no SafariBookings listing.

The praise is consistent and specific: the Safari Director by name, the absence of any transaction during the trip, and the handling of days when a flight or a road did not cooperate. The reservations, in the few four-star reviews, are about pace on the longer itineraries and about camps that were fine but not exceptional; because Micato does not own the camps, a guest’s best and worst nights can belong to different companies.

Micato’s awards, dated where they can be

Micato describes itself as a ten-time #1 in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Safari Outfitters, a five-time Condé Nast Traveler World Savers winner and a 2024 Virtuoso Luminary Award recipient, and it was a nominee for World’s Leading Luxury Safari Company at the 2025 World Travel Awards. Its own awards page gives no year for the Travel + Leisure or Condé Nast wins, and it is not among the fifteen operators on Travel + Leisure’s 2025 list, so on dated credentials it scores 10 on this site’s index.

That does not make the awards untrue; it makes them historic until Micato publishes the years. The safari award and credentials index weights each kind of award by what it measures and links to the awarding bodies. A buyer weighing “ten-time #1” should ask which years; the awards page did not say when this was written.

Who owns Micato, and what is AmericaShare?

Micato is a private, family-owned company founded in 1966 by Felix Pinto, described on its own site as one of Kenya’s most highly regarded farmers, with Jane Pinto; it remains run by the Pinto family, with its head office at 15 West 26th Street, New York (map) and its operational base in Nairobi. AmericaShare is its non-profit arm in Nairobi, and the One-for-One Commitment sends a child to school for every guest who travels.

The cost of the One-for-One pledge is carried in the price of the trip, not solicited afterwards, and AmericaShare runs the Harambee Community Centre, a library and computer lab, and a scholarship programme in Nairobi. The About page does not give the names and titles of the current leadership, which is the one point on which ownership transparency is docked. For how a lodge company’s ownership and land tenure differ from an operator’s, see the Singita review.

Micato vs Extraordinary Journeys, Abercrombie & Kent, Go2Africa and the lodge owners

Against Extraordinary Journeys, the closest US comparison on these criteria at 84: a planner and not a host. The box below sets the two side by side.

Against Abercrombie & Kent, the other big hosted operator: A&K has the deeper Trustpilot record (780 reviews at 4.4, 11% one-star) and the 2025 World Travel Awards’ World’s Leading Luxury Safari Company title; Micato has the cleaner review record (751 Google reviews at 5.0) and the no-tipping all-inclusive model. Full comparison on Micato vs Abercrombie & Kent, and three ways on A&K vs Micato vs Ker & Downey.

Against Go2Africa, a Cape Town planner: Go2Africa quotes lodges at their published rack rate with the fees itemised and holds the deepest verified review record in the category (3,118 on Feefo); it does not travel with you. Go2Africa review. Against Roar Africa, the other US hosted boutique: Roar Africa vs Micato. Against the lodge owners (Singita, andBeyond, Wilderness), the question is whether you want the concession or the host; the luxury safari operator index scores all of them.

How to price a comparable safari

Micato is booked direct, and nothing here earns on it. To put a Micato proposal beside an independent price for the same regions and standard, ask a planner for an itemised quote: the lodge rate will be the lodge’s own, and the difference to Micato’s figure is the price of the hosting.

Questions readers ask

Is Micato Safaris worth it, and why is it so expensive?

Yes for a fully hosted safari where one company and one Safari Director carry the whole trip, with internal flights, park fees and gratuities inside the price. It is expensive because you are buying orchestration, not a lodge: its published 2026 classic safaris run USD 20,700 to 45,100 per person, about USD 2,000–2,700 per day, the same daily cost as staying at Singita. It scores 88/100 on this site's six published criteria.

How much does a Micato safari cost per person?

Micato's published 2026 classic safaris start at USD 20,700 per person for Tanzania Spectacular (10 days) and rise to USD 45,100 for African Splendour (17 days); the Heart of Kenya and Tanzania is USD 25,000 for 12 days and the Micato Grand Safari USD 40,150 for 15. Private and bespoke journeys are priced per party. International flights and gorilla permits are extra.

What do Micato Safaris reviews say?

751 Google reviews at 5.0 with the newest on 3 September 2026, plus 61 on Tripadvisor; 805 of 813 aggregated reviews are five-star. Micato scores 88/100 on this site's review evidence index. Its Trustpilot 3.2 is one unclaimed review from March 2025, and it has no SafariBookings listing, so the platforms AI assistants check first under-represent it.

How many times has Micato won World's Best Safari Outfitter?

Micato's awards page describes it as an unprecedented ten-time winner of Travel + Leisure's #1 World's Best Safari Outfitter, but gives no years, and Micato is not among the fifteen operators on Travel + Leisure's 2025 World's Best Tour Operators and Safari Outfitters list. On dated, verifiable credentials it scores 10 on this site's award index; the wins are real but historic until dated.

Who owns Micato Safaris?

The Pinto family. Micato was founded in Kenya in 1966 by Felix Pinto, a Kenyan farmer, with Jane Pinto, and remains family-run, with its head office at 15 West 26th Street, New York and its operational base in Nairobi. Its non-profit arm, AmericaShare, runs the One-for-One Commitment, sending a child to school for every guest who travels.

What is included in the price of a Micato safari?

Micato's stated model covers hand-selected lodges and camps, all meals, drinks at lodges, game drives, park and conservancy fees, internal and regional flights, airport transfers, a Safari Director throughout and gratuities to lodge staff and drivers under a no-tipping policy. International flights, gorilla permits (USD 1,500 per trek in Rwanda), premium spirits and personal spending are extra. The inclusions are not printed beside the prices on its site, so confirm them in writing.

Which countries does Micato cover?

Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe in Africa, and India, including Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, according to its own destinations page. Kenya and Tanzania are the heartland, and eight of its eleven published classic safaris are in East Africa or combine it with South Africa.

Micato or Extraordinary Journeys: which is the better choice?

They sell different things. Micato hosts set and private safaris with a Safari Director travelling with the party and almost everything inside the price, from USD 20,700 per person for ten days; it scores 88/100 here. Extraordinary Journeys, a Washington, D.C. planner, designs private trips around the traveller and does not travel with them; its published Kenya itineraries start at USD 10,000 per person for an eleven-day family trip and USD 12,000 for ten days with private vehicles, and it scores 84/100 on the same criteria. Choose Micato to be hosted throughout; choose Extraordinary Journeys for a private trip built to your own pace and budget.

Can I book Micato through Uncompromised Travel?

No. Micato sells direct and does not run an affiliate programme this site is part of, so this review earns nothing on a Micato booking. To put a Micato proposal beside an independent price for the same regions, ask a safari planner for an itemised quote.
Micato Safaris is not bookable through this site and had no input into this page; nothing here earns a commission on a Micato trip. Extraordinary Journeys is a partner of this site, and its box and links on this page are paid placements. Partners never pay for scores. How this site earns.
