Wild Frontiers Review 2026: Small-Group Prices, the BGF Deal, Protection and a Record Score of 89

By Richard J. · written from ValenciaRecord score 89/100Verified 25 September 2026

Wild Frontiers scores 89/100 as a company record: the London small-group and tailor-made operator Jonny Bealby started in 1998 names specialists who have lived and guided where it sells, prices every trip from £1,640, holds ATOL 5975 and ABTOT 5228, and has 4.9 out of 5 from 777 Trustpilot reviews. This page, first verified on 14 September 2026 as a safari planner review, now covers the whole company: the June 2026 investment by BGF, prices across five regions, booking terms, support, reviews and the gaps in the record.

How Wild Frontiers scores: 89 out of 100

Wild Frontiers scores 89 out of 100: full marks for pricing, reviews and financial protection, strong on planning, and held back only by on-the-ground cover. It was not on the Power Rankings, which were set on an older rubric; the rankings will be recalculated from these records.

How the score works (100 points). Planning depth 25: named specialists with stated first-hand experience of the regions they sell, leaders' destination experience, countries covered, sample itineraries day by day with named hotels, and years trading · On-the-ground cover 20: a published 24-hour number, presence inside the destinations, and the company's own guides or hosts on the trip · Pricing transparency 20: priced sample trips, inclusions, currency and season, and published booking terms · Review evidence 20: the best independent review platform by score and volume, a second platform, and a review in the last six months · Financial protection 15: numbered ATOL, ABTA or ABTOT cover in the UK, USTOA in the US, provincial registration in Canada. Wild Frontiers publishes nearly everything a buyer checks before paying: a price on each trip, a group cap, the people who plan and lead, the cancellation scale and two numbered protection schemes. What it lacks is what bigger operators buy: offices abroad and a staffed 24-hour line of its own.

Who owns Wild Frontiers?

Wild Frontiers has been controlled since 16 June 2026 by a new holding company, Wild Frontiers Topco Limited, in which the growth investor BGF holds between 25% and 50%, a minority stake.

Companies House shows Wild Frontiers Bidco Limited holding 75% or more of the trading company and BGF Investment Management Limited holding 25% to 50% of Topco, both notified on the day the investment completed. The first version of this page said BGF controlled 75% or more; that was wrong, and is corrected here. No other shareholder of Topco is above the 25% reporting threshold.

On the same day founder Jonny Bealby and two other directors left the board. Bdaily reported that Bealby moves to an ambassador role focused on the Wild Frontiers Foundation, that agency sales grew 30% in 2025 and that the plan is to nearly triple passenger numbers in four years. Clare Tobin, who joined as managing director in October 2023 from Olympic Holidays, runs the company.

How much does a Wild Frontiers trip cost?

Wild Frontiers trips read for this record cost from £1,640 per person for nine days in Georgia over Christmas to £7,670 for 24 days across the five Central Asian republics. All prices were read on 25 September 2026 and are starting prices per person; most exclude international flights.

Trip pages count the meals (the Rajasthan tour includes 14 breakfasts, 13 lunches and 13 dinners), list the transport and guiding, and give accommodation by grade: that tour spends seven nights in "premium" and seven in "standard" hotels, unnamed. The first version of this page listed nine Africa prices, from £2,495 for ten days in Ghana to £10,985 for 11 days flying round Namibia.

Wild Frontiers booking terms and financial protection

Wild Frontiers takes a deposit of 10% per person on group tours and up to 30% on tailor-made trips, wants the balance 70 days before departure, and holds ATOL 5975 and ABTOT 5228.

When you cancelWhat you pay
71 days or more before departureLoss of deposit
70 to 51 days50% of the tour cost
50 to 31 days75% of the tour cost
Under 30 days100% of the tour cost

The booking conditions are dated 16 February 2024 and name Wild Frontiers Adventure Travel Ltd as the contracting party for both group and tailor-made trips. ATOL covers flight-inclusive packages and ABTOT the rest; the peace-of-mind page prints both numbers and AITO membership 5141, which AITO confirms. How its deposits compare with other operators is in the safari operator payment terms index.

Who plans and leads a Wild Frontiers trip

Wild Frontiers names the people behind its trips, and several state they lived or worked in the regions it sells.

Head of product Anna Baldwin lived in Cambodia on and off for five years and ran operations for a local ground company in Southeast Asia; Marc Leaderman, a director who oversees product and operations, led tours in more than 60 countries; tour leader James has lived and worked in more than 75 countries and now lives in Luang Prabang; Suryaveer, a guide in Rajasthan, was born and brought up in Udaipur. Founder Jonny Bealby followed Kipling into Pakistan's North-West Frontier in 1996 and lived three months with the Kalash before starting the company.

Group tours carry a tour leader from start to finish with local guides alongside, and groups average nine travellers, at most 12. How that compares with travelling privately is in small-group expedition or private trip.

Support on the ground

Wild Frontiers promises "a support team available 24/7" on its trip pages but prints no 24-hour number of its own; the one 24/7 line it publishes is ABTOT's, for insolvency only.

There is no Wild Frontiers office abroad: trips run with local guides and ground partners, and on group tours with a tour leader throughout. The London office is open until 7.30pm Monday to Thursday and until 4pm on Saturdays, and a US line answers weekday mornings Eastern time.

What Wild Frontiers reviews say

Wild Frontiers holds 4.9 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 777 reviews, on a profile claimed in July 2015, and 98% excellent on AITO from 225 reviews.

The newest Trustpilot review read for this record was about five days old. Wild Frontiers has also been a certified B Corporation since September 2024, with a score of 86.6 against a travel-industry average of 80.7. Awards shown on its home page, from the British Travel Awards, Condé Nast Traveller and Wendy Perrin, were not confirmed at the awarding bodies.

Wild Frontiers for Africa

On this site's safari rubric Wild Frontiers scored 74/100 in September 2026, sixth of 18 safari planners, as an adventure operator whose Africa is West Africa and Madagascar as much as Namibia.

The safari planner index explains that score. For the Big Five parks, the luxury safari operator index and the best wildlife travel destinations are the better starting points.

Who Wild Frontiers suits, and who it does not

Wild Frontiers suits travellers who want a small group, or a private trip, in places most operators do not sell, such as Pakistan, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Saudi Arabia and West Africa, with a named leader and ATOL cover.

It suits less well a traveller who wants named luxury hotels on every night, or a staffed 24-hour line of the company's own. For destinations in the same spirit, see the best adventure travel destinations and the most underrated destinations of 2026; its solo departures are compared in the best tour operators for solo travellers.

Booking Wild Frontiers: the decisions that come next

Wild Frontiers prices exclude international flights, so the traveller still chooses how to pay, how to get there, where to stay either side and what to claim if a flight fails.
