Safari Operator Price Comparison 2026: Who Publishes Real Rates, Who Publishes a From-Price and Who Tells You Nothing

30 operators assessed · 7 rankedVerified 21 September 2026Updated 6 October 2026By Richard J.

Four safari operators tie at the top of this price disclosure index on 90 of 100: Angama, Natural Selection, Singita and Time + Tide, each publishing real seasonal rates across its portfolio and a deposit and balance schedule in its terms. Tswalu Kalahari follows at 86, Wilderness and Great Plains Conservation at 83. Thirty operators were assessed against six published criteria. Thirteen publish real rates, eleven publish a from-price, four publish nothing without an enquiry, and one advertises from-prices that do not render as a number (“Starting from $NaN”). Among the fifteen trip planners, Extraordinary Journeys scores highest at 79.

How the price disclosure score works

Six criteria, 100 points: disclosure level 25, rate coverage 25, price readable 15, product named 10, payment terms 15, client money 10. Thirty operators were assessed: fifteen camp and lodge groups that sell nights, and fifteen trip planners that sell itineraries.
  • Disclosure level (25). Whether a reader can see a real rate on the public site: full published rates, a from-price only, or nothing without an enquiry.
  • Rate coverage (25). How far the pricing reaches: a rate card covering the whole portfolio across seasons, rates on some properties or itineraries only, a single figure, or nothing.
  • Price readable (15). Whether the published figure carries a currency and renders as a number.
  • Product named (10). Whether the price is attached to a named room, camp or itinerary and a stated unit.
  • Payment terms (15). Whether the deposit percentage and the balance due date are published in the booking terms.
  • Client money (10). What protects a client’s deposit: a statutory or bonded scheme with a published reference, a scheme without one, a company promise, or nothing stated.

Scores measure price disclosure only. Where a rates page could not be read at all (a JavaScript booking widget, a terms page returning an error), the operator is assessed but not ranked, because missing evidence is not the same as publishing nothing.

Two criteria separate the table. The first is whether any real figure appears at all. The second, worth the same twenty-five points, is how far that figure reaches: a rate card covering the whole portfolio across named seasons is a different act of disclosure from a single from-price on a landing page. Thirteen operators publish the former. A camp sells a night, and a night has a price; a trip planner sells something assembled after a conversation and can more plausibly say it has nothing to quote.

Not one African camp or lodge group in this index publishes any protection for the deposit it holds. All fifteen take money, commonly 20 to 30 per cent and commonly a year or more before travel, and none names a bonding scheme, a trust account or an escrow arrangement in its terms. Twelve state expressly that nothing of the kind applies. Nine of the fifteen trip planners do publish protection, with licence numbers a reader can check.

Every published nightly rate, with the season it applies to

The lowest published nightly rate in this index is USD 247 and the highest is USD 2,720, an eleven-fold spread, in three currencies, which is why nothing here is converted. Each rate is shown with the room, camp and season it attaches to.

LondoloziZAR 27,950Varty Camp, from ZAR 27,950 per person per nightcould not be read

The spread inside a single group matters as much as the spread between them. Elewana’s USD 247 buys a Plantation Room at Arusha Coffee Lodge, a city lodge and not a safari camp; the lowest safari-camp rate in the same portfolio is considerably higher. The Royal Portfolio’s ZAR 33,200 is an Aloe Room at Royal Malewane and excludes a ZAR 625 per person per night conservation fee, stated on the page. Our safari price per night decoder sets out what these figures usually include, and why safaris cost what they do takes the question back to bed levels and concession fees.

Every published trip price, and what it is for

Ten of the fifteen trip planners publish a per-person figure somewhere, but only five carry a price on every itinerary in their listing: Extraordinary Journeys, Yellow Zebra, Scott Dunn, Audley and Safari.com. The test is whether a reader browsing the site meets a number.
PlannerLowest price, pp a tripWhat the price is forItineraries priced

Micato prices eleven of thirteen, leaving its custom safaris open. Go2Africa and Kensington show nothing on the listing page and a real price on the itinerary page. Wild Frontiers prices its group tours and not its tailor-made trips, and the same Ghana itinerary we recorded at GBP 2,495 on 14 September read GBP 2,950 on 21 September: a published from-price is a snapshot and not a commitment. Booking through a specialist against booking direct covers what the planner’s margin buys.

Deposits, balances and what protects the money

Twenty of thirty publish a deposit percentage and twenty-five publish a balance date, but the balance window runs from 45 days to 120: four months of a client’s money held before anyone sets off.

Time + Tide’s 45-day balance is half Wilderness’s 90 and a third of the 120 days asked by Micato, Ker & Downey and Abercrombie & Kent. Angama is the only operator here that publishes a seasonal deposit structure (20 per cent standard, 30 per cent peak) and states that it is non-refundable. Three of the six British planners, Scott Dunn, Yellow Zebra and Audley, publish no deposit percentage: all three state that the deposit is set on the individual quotation. See safari deposits and payment terms for what these schedules mean in practice.

The six operators this index could not score

Six of the thirty could not be assessed on every criterion, and are recorded as assessed and not ranked. They are not scored zero on evidence we could not read.

Abercrombie & Kent’s site is rendered entirely in client-side JavaScript. Every destination, safari and tailor-made page we requested returned tracking script and meta tags and no body text, on both its United States and United Kingdom domains. Londolozi and The Royal Portfolio publish rates through booking widgets that behave the same way; both were recorded with the nightly figure we could confirm from elsewhere on their sites, but the coverage question could not be answered. A&K Sanctuary Retreats blocks the paths that would carry a rate sheet, and the rate PDFs that surfaced for it were hosted by a third-party agent aggregator. Aardvark Safaris returned a 401 on its own safari pricing page. Elewana Collection publishes a full rate structure and is unranked on a different criterion: nothing about client money protection could be found in its terms, in either direction.

If a company’s own pricing page will not load for an automated request, it will often behave unpredictably for a person on hotel wifi in another country. How to verify a safari operator sets out the checks that work regardless.

The seven ranked operators in detail

Angama: 90/100 for price disclosure

Kenya · Mara Triangle · rates and payment terms both published

Angama takes 90 of 100, the joint highest score in this index, because it answers both halves of the pricing question. Rates are published across its properties with named seasons, and the booking terms state a deposit of 20 per cent in standard season and 30 in peak, non-refundable, with the balance due 45 days out in standard season and 60 in peak. Ten of the thirty operators assessed publish no deposit percentage at all. Angama loses the ten points for client money protection, as every African camp group here does, because nothing in its terms names a bonding scheme, a trust account or an escrow arrangement behind the deposit it holds. See our Angama review.

Natural Selection: 90/100 for price disclosure

Botswana and Namibia · a downloadable rack rate sheet covering fifteen camps

Natural Selection publishes a rack rate sheet, downloadable without a trade login, covering fifteen camps with seasonal bands. The lowest rate on it is USD 595 per person per night at Elephant Pan in Botswana’s green season, 10 January to 31 March 2026, with a USD 60 per person community and conservation fee stated separately. Deposit is 20 per cent and the balance falls due 60 days before travel. It scores 90 and drops only the client money criterion. Its record is here, and Natural Selection against Wilderness compares the two rate structures.

Natural Selection: official site

Singita: 90/100 for price disclosure

South Africa · seasonal rates on the site · deposit and balance in the terms

Singita is the most expensive operator in this index that publishes a rate, and it publishes it plainly: USD 2,720 per person per night for a suite at Singita Kwitonda in off-peak season, 6 January to 31 May and 1 November to 14 December 2026. Its pre-payment terms carry a 25 per cent deposit with the balance due 60 days out, both in a downloadable document. It takes 90. The same document says nothing about what protects the deposit. Compare with Royal Malewane or Londolozi.

Singita: official site

Time + Tide: 90/100 for price disclosure

Zambia and Madagascar · nine properties priced · green season bands published

Time + Tide publishes rates for nine properties with green season bands named: USD 810 per adult per night at Chongwe Camp in green season, April to June and November. Its terms state a 20 per cent deposit and a balance due 45 days out, the shortest balance window of any camp group assessed. It scores 90. Rooms at its Madagascar property Tsara Komba start from EUR 385, in a different currency and for a different product, which is why the index records the unit and currency beside every figure and converts nothing. The full record is here.

Time + Tide: official site

Tswalu Kalahari: 86/100 for price disclosure

South Africa · a published rate, flat year-round, no seasonal bands

Tswalu publishes a rate valid 1 January to 31 December 2026 (ZAR 46,400 per person sharing at Motse Legae), and that year-round flatness is why it scores 86 and not 90. A rate with no season attached does not tell a reader whether it is the cheapest month or the dearest, and Tswalu runs promotional discounts separately. Everything else is in place: 20 per cent deposit, balance 60 days out, both in the terms. See its review and the Kalahari comparison.

Tswalu Kalahari: official site

Great Plains Conservation: 83/100 for price disclosure

Botswana and Kenya · fourteen camps priced · no deposit percentage published

Great Plains prices all fourteen of its camps, the most complete property-level coverage of any group assessed, and its lowest published figure, USD 1,125 per person per night at Mara Expedition Camp in low season, states that a USD 100 per person per night foundation contribution sits outside it. Like Wilderness it publishes no deposit percentage, only a 60-day balance window, and finishes at 83. See the full record and the comparison with Natural Selection.

Great Plains Conservation: official site

Wilderness: 83/100 for price disclosure

Botswana · rates across the portfolio · no deposit percentage published

Wilderness publishes rates across its portfolio with dated seasons (USD 2,285 per person per night at Vumbura Plains, 1 November to 19 December 2026). No deposit percentage appears in its published terms, only a balance due 90 days before travel, the longest balance window of any camp group here. A client knows when the money is due but not how much goes down first, and nothing states what protects it. That costs it seven points against Angama and Singita on identical rate disclosure. See the Wilderness record and Wilderness against Great Plains.

Three rules before you pay a safari deposit

  1. Ask what the rate excludes before you ask what it includes. Conservation levies, community fees and park entry are commonly charged per person per night and commonly sit outside the published rate. Great Plains and Natural Selection both state theirs beside the figure; most do not.
  2. Get the deposit percentage and the balance date in writing at the first quotation. Ten of thirty publish no deposit figure and five publish no balance date.
  3. Ask what protects the deposit. An ATOL or ABTOT licence number, a TICO registration or a USTOA membership can be checked in a public register in under a minute. A company’s own promise cannot, and is worth as much as the company. No African camp group in this index offers the former.

What changed in safari pricing in 2026

Rhino Africa’s from-prices have rendered as “Starting from $NaN” across its South Africa tour listings since at least 14 September 2026 and were still doing so on 21 September, on all twelve packages checked. African Bush Camps has moved its rate sheet behind a trade portal login, and the previously public PDF now returns a 404. andBeyond publishes no rates on its own site and directs the question to an enquiry. And Wild Frontiers’ published Ghana from-price moved by GBP 455 in seven days. For the operators themselves see the luxury safari operator index and the safari planner index.

Questions readers ask

Which safari operators publish their prices?

Thirteen of the thirty operators assessed publish real rates on their own public site, and thirteen publish a rate card or priced itinerary list covering their whole portfolio. On this price disclosure index, Angama, Natural Selection, Singita and Time + Tide score highest at 90 of 100, followed by Tswalu Kalahari at 86 and Wilderness and Great Plains Conservation at 83. A further eleven publish a from-price only, four publish nothing without an enquiry, and one advertises from-prices that do not render as a number, so it publishes no readable price.

Which safari trip planner publishes the most complete prices?

Five trip planners carry a price on every itinerary in their listings: Extraordinary Journeys, Yellow Zebra Safaris, Scott Dunn, Audley Travel and Safari.com. Extraordinary Journeys scores highest of the fifteen planners assessed, at 79 of 100, ahead of Micato Safaris at 77 and Audley, Scott Dunn and Yellow Zebra at 76.

Do safari camps publish deposit and balance terms?

Twenty of the thirty operators assessed publish a deposit percentage and twenty-five publish a balance due date. Deposits run from 20 to 30 per cent. Balance windows run from 45 days before travel at Time + Tide to 120 days at Micato Safaris, Ker & Downey and Abercrombie & Kent, which is four months of a client's money held in advance.

Is a safari deposit protected if the operator fails?

Not at any of the fifteen African camp and lodge groups assessed here. Not one of them names a bonding scheme, a trust account or an escrow arrangement in its published terms, and twelve state expressly that nothing of the kind applies. Nine of the fifteen trip planners assessed do publish protection: ATOL and ABTOT licence numbers in the United Kingdom, a TICO registration in Ontario, a USTOA membership in the United States.

Why do some safari prices show as $NaN?

Rhino Africa's tour listing pages display "Starting from $NaN" in place of a price. That is a broken currency conversion rendering a non-numeric value, not a real figure. It was recorded on 14 September 2026 and confirmed unchanged across twelve South Africa tour packages on 21 September 2026. An advertised price that does not render is treated in this index as advertised but not readable, and scores between a working from-price and nothing at all.

What is the difference between a published rate and a from-price?

A published rate is a real figure for a named room, camp or itinerary in a stated season, which a reader can check against what they are eventually quoted. A from-price is a floor: the cheapest thing the operator sells, usually in the cheapest month, usually excluding international flights, and usually not the trip being discussed. Eleven operators here publish from-prices and thirteen publish rates, and the index separates the two because they answer different questions.

Why are only seven operators ranked when thirty were assessed?

Because four operators tie at the top on identical evidence and the ranked list stops after the next three. All thirty were assessed against the same rubric on the same day, and every one appears by name on this page with its published record. Seven hold a ranked position; seventeen more are scored below them; six could not be scored on every criterion and are recorded as assessed and not ranked.

Can an operator pay to rank higher on this index?

No. The rubric and its weights were fixed and published before the data was collected, assessment is identical for every operator whether it engages with us or not, and no position is for sale. What an operator can do is publish a rate, state a deposit percentage, or name what protects a client's money. That changes the record, not the rubric.
Extraordinary Journeys is a partner of this site, and its box and links on this page are paid placements. It was scored on 21 September 2026, before the partnership, on the same rubric as the other twenty-nine. Partners never pay for scores. Go2Africa and Safari.com, both scored here, are affiliates of this site on other pages. This page carries no affiliate links. No position on this index is for sale. How this site earns · How we work.
