Best Luxury Family and Multigenerational Tour Operators 2026: Eight Scored out of 100

By Richard Jasinski·Updated 11 October 2026

Micato Safaris scores highest of the eight luxury family operators ranked here, at 88 out of 100, ahead of Extraordinary Journeys (84), Scott Dunn (82) and Tauck (75). Each company carries the one score it has on every page of this site. On the facts a parent checks first, the picture changes: Scott Dunn is the only one with childcare from four months, and Micato publishes no minimum age, no childcare and no family price. Every card below shows both.

What changed on 11 October 2026. Each operator with a review on this site now carries that review's score, the rule used on every page here, so the order changed: Micato moves from 46 to 88 and first, Butterfield & Robinson from 42 to 71, Scott Dunn from 94 to 82, Original Travel from 73 to 70 and Black Tomato from 71 to 62. Thomson Safaris, with no review yet, keeps 56 on this page's family criteria. Two operators join: Extraordinary Journeys at 84, a paid partner of this site placed by its review score like everyone else, and Tauck at 75. The family facts were read again at source and sit beside every score. The booking-site links this page used to label as affiliate links have been removed.

The eight, scored

The score is each company's own review score on this site; the four family facts beside it come from the operator's own site, read between 7 and 11 October 2026. The score decides the order. The facts decide which operator fits your children, and the last line of each card says who each one suits.

Reviewed but not yet ranked here: Abercrombie & Kent, 86 on its company record, and Audley Travel, 82 on its company record. Both sell family trips, but A&K's family travel page, read on 11 October 2026, names no family journey, age or price, and Audley's family holidays page could not be read that day. Each joins at its review score once its family trips are read at source, which would place A&K second and Audley joint fourth with Scott Dunn.

What the eight publish for families

The score and the family facts point to different operators, and a parent needs both. Micato scores highest as a company and publishes the least for a family: no minimum age, no childcare and no family price. Scott Dunn is third on score and by a distance the best documented for young children, with kids' clubs from four months, a nanny service and priced family trips. Across the eight, three publish a youngest age, four offer childcare in some form, six price a named family trip and five state a protection scheme.

That is the segment sold hardest on reassurance and documented least. A family booking turns on minimum ages and on what happens to a four-year-old at three in the afternoon, which is why those facts sit on every card next to the score, and why the steps below start with them. The power rankings compare the same companies on the whole business.

Operator by operator

1. Micato Safaris: 88/100

The score comes from its safari review, where first-hand African expertise and a service model backed by a 24-hour concierge team lead. As a family operator it is the hardest of the eight to read in advance. Sixty years in East Africa, family pages, sole-use houses such as Ol Jogi for parties of four to fourteen, and a Safari Director who tailors activities from elephant-nursery visits to rhino tracking. What is not published: a minimum age (its FAQ welcomes children on Classic Safaris and leaves limits to the camps), any childcare, a family price, or a protection scheme, and Micato could not be found in USTOA's directory. Its safaris start from US$20,700 per person for ten days in Tanzania. Pick it if a hosted safari for three generations matters more to you than childcare, and ask each camp's minimum age in writing.

2. Extraordinary Journeys: 84/100 Partner

The score comes from its safari review, where first-hand African expertise scores 24 of 25. A Washington, D.C. specialist founded in 2008, it publishes eight priced family trips, all private. The family trip to Kenya runs eleven days from US$10,000 per person and is written for young children: Basecamp Mara's Young Explorers Club, bush craft and archery with a ranger at Ol Malo, game-drive times moved for naps, exclusive-use vehicles, and a nanny who can join for part or all of the trip. The multi-generational private safari in Kenya runs fourteen days from US$17,000, with walking safaris “scaled for little legs and active grandparents”. The Zimbabwe and Botswana family safari is thirteen days from US$10,000, with mini-ranger activities and exclusive-use vehicles; the Tanzania family safari is fourteen days from US$14,000, from Ruaha to Pemba Island. Beyond Africa, a Japan private family tour runs thirteen days from US$16,000, and three India trips, including a multi-generational trip to India of thirteen days from US$17,500, start at US$12,500. Not published: a minimum age, a child price, a 24-hour number for travellers mid-trip, or a protection scheme; it has told this site that client payments are held in a separate account. Pick it if you want a private safari built around young children's routines, or Japan or India with children, from a US company. Extraordinary Journeys is a paid partner of this site and is placed by its review score, by the same rule as every operator here. Extraordinary Journeys review →

3. Scott Dunn: 82/100

The score comes from its company record, with full marks for pricing transparency and protection. On family evidence it is the best documented of the eight by a distance. The Explorers programme runs kids' clubs from four months in four age bands, Globetrotters to Pioneers, with a Crew Club for pre-teens, half- or full-day private nannies, and eight named resorts from Portetta in the Alps to Niyama in the Maldives. Family holidays start from £2,800 per person, and its family adventures page prices named trips: seven nights in Jordan from £2,900, nine in the Greek islands from £5,600 and ten in France from £6,700 per person. ATOL 2471 and ABTOT 5222 are printed on its Our Promise page. The one thing missing is a child price. Pick it if your children are under twelve and you want childcare booked before you travel. Scott Dunn record →

4. Tauck: 75/100

The score comes from its company record, with full marks for pricing transparency and protection. Tauck Bridges, its family brand, runs 20 guided family journeys for travellers aged 8 to 88 and over, with other families on fixed dates, from Alaska and the Galápagos to a Danube riverboat. Its Tanzania family safari runs ten days from US$9,390 per person in June to August and December, with a minimum age of five (seven for the balloon flight) and a child discount when the birth date is given at booking; no child price is shown. There is no childcare. Protection: USTOA membership and California Seller of Travel 2016001-20. Wilton, Connecticut. Pick it if you want a guided departure with other families and a published age range. Tauck record →

5. Butterfield & Robinson: 71/100

The score comes from its company record, which rates its pricing transparency and review evidence highly. For families it is the clearest case of an offer that is better than its documentation. B&R's bike-and-walk pacing is among the most naturally family-adjustable formats in luxury travel, and its FAQ is unusually clear: small-group departures are for adults aged 18 and over, and bespoke trips are designed around groups that include “young children, grandparents or every generation in between”. Both TICO registrations are shown. But its family page offers no childcare, no family price in any currency and no named family itinerary. Pick it if you want a private bike-and-walk trip paced for three generations, and ask for the whole-family price early. Butterfield & Robinson record →

6. Original Travel: 70/100

The score comes from its company record, with full marks for protection. Its childcare answer is one nobody else has: a Sharky & George “partner-in-crime” who joins the family on holiday, with activity packs for every child aged three to ten. Nine family itineraries carry price ranges from £930 to £2,515 per person, from three days in San Sebastián to a fifteen-day road trip through Spain and Portugal. Its booking terms print ATOL 5922 and ABTA Y5632. It states no minimum age. On 15 September it began trading as Voyageurs du Monde, the French group it has been part of since 2017; the team, terms and protection are unchanged. Pick it if you are travelling in Europe with children aged three to ten. Original Travel record →

7. Black Tomato: 62/100

The score comes from its company record. Family pages are split by toddlers, teens, older children and multi-generational groups, and the Kenya family safari, eight nights across Hemingways Nairobi, Borana and Cottar's from £9,500 per person before flights, is one of the best-documented single family trips here, down to the note that Borana has no minimum age. Childcare is arranged property by property. Its booking conditions describe Black Tomato as a managed branch of Hays Tours Operating Limited and print ATOL 10531 and ABTA Y6071; the licence is Hays's rather than Black Tomato's own. Pick it if you are travelling with teenagers, or want a Kenya family safari priced in sterling with ATOL cover. Black Tomato record →

8. Thomson Safaris: 56/100

Thomson has no review on this site yet, so it keeps the score from this page's family criteria of 7 October 2026: family policy 16 of 25, childcare 8 of 20, family logistics 18 of 20, pricing 14 of 20 and protection 0 of 15. Formerly Thomson Family Adventures, it is now part of Thomson Safaris, whose parent company Lindblad Expeditions bought in April 2024. The logistics are strong: The Perfect Tanzania Family Safari runs ten days from US$10,290 per adult on its Christmas 2026 departures and US$10,790 to US$11,390 in 2027, with July and August dates and a private option, and its safari finder prints a minimum age of six for that trip and twelve for Highlights of Tanzania. Missing: a child price, any childcare and any protection scheme. Thomson does not appear in USTOA's member directory, though Lindblad does. Pick it if you want dated family departures in Tanzania with children aged six and over.

If the operator at the top of the list does not fit your family, these are the ones to look at next, and why.

How to use this before booking

  1. Ask the minimum age in writing, camp by camp. The operator's policy and the lodge's policy are different documents, and on safari the lodge wins.
  2. Ask what a child does between lunch and dinner. That question separates a family programme from a family-friendly brochure faster than anything else.
  3. Get the protection scheme and its number. A UK ATOL or ABTA number can be checked in a minute. For US operators, ask for USTOA membership or the state seller-of-travel registration; our deposits and payment terms guide explains what each protects, and the payment terms index compares what each safari company will charge if you cancel.
  4. Price per family, not per adult. None of the eight publishes a child rate; Tauck offers a child discount when the birth date is given at booking. Ask for the whole-family figure before comparing.

Around the operator's part. Most family itineraries exclude the international flights and the first and last nights, so confirm both before comparing prices. A car seat for the airport run is worth booking with the transfer company in advance, because safari transfers rarely provide one.

The caveat. The score measures the company as a whole, and the family facts measure what a parent can establish before picking up the phone. Both change when the evidence does: when an operator publishes its minimum age, childcare position or protection scheme, its card changes, and when its review is re-scored, its place does, by the same rule for everyone.

Where the group is the point. For multigenerational trips of ten or more where the villa matters more than the guide, our group villa guide covers the estates.

None of them runs kids' clubs from four months, which only Scott Dunn does.

How is this index scored?

Each operator carries the score from its own review on this site, the same number it carries on every page: a safari review for Micato and Extraordinary Journeys, a company record for the rest. Thomson Safaris has no review yet and keeps 56 on this page's family criteria. The family facts beside each score (youngest age, childcare, priced family trips and protection) come from each operator's own site and do not change the order.

What happened to Thomson Family Adventures?

It has been folded into Thomson Safaris of Watertown, Massachusetts, and familyadventures.com now sends visitors to thomsonsafaris.com. Lindblad Expeditions bought the parent company, Wineland-Thomson Adventures, in April 2024. Family departures continue under the Thomson Safaris name, with dated Christmas 2026 and summer 2027 trips.

Each score is the one the company carries on its own review on this site (Thomson Safaris: this page's family criteria). The family facts come from each operator's own site, read between 7 and 11 October 2026, and every claim links to its source. Extraordinary Journeys is a paid partner of this site: its links are marked as sponsored, and it is placed by its review score, by the same rule as every operator here. No partner can buy a score or a position, and no other link on this page pays this site. See the disclosure page. First published 15 September 2026.
