Micato vs Abercrombie & Kent 2026: Which Luxury Safari Operator Is Better, and What Each Costs

Micato 88 · Abercrombie & Kent 81 on six published criteriaVerified 7 September 2026By Richard J.Neither bookable through this site

Micato Safaris is the better choice for a fully hosted African safari where service is the first criterion, and Abercrombie & Kent is the better choice when Africa is one leg of a wider journey or you want the operator to own some of the camps. On this site's six published criteria Micato scores 88/100 and Abercrombie & Kent 81/100; the gap is review quality (751 Google reviews at 5.0 against 780 Trustpilot reviews at 4.4 with 11% one-star) rather than reach, where A&K's 55 offices in 100 countries are unmatched. On price, the one like-for-like pairing that can be sourced puts Micato at nearly twice A&K's small-group figure for twelve days in Kenya and Tanzania: USD 25,000 against USD 13,495. The earlier version of this page gave both operators unsourced per-day ranges; the published figures below replace them.

Both were born in Kenya: A&K in 1962 under Geoffrey Kent, Micato in 1966 under Felix and Jane Pinto. Micato remains an Africa-and-India company run by the founding family from Nairobi and New York; A&K is now a global group in which safari is one product line.

Is Micato better than Abercrombie & Kent?

For a safari, on the evidence, yes: Micato's review record is cleaner, its hosted model is more complete (a Safari Director throughout, tips and internal flights inside the price), and it does one thing. Abercrombie & Kent is the better operator when you want the same company to run a safari, a Nile cruise and a week in Southeast Asia on one booking, or when you value staying in camps the operator owns.

The two companies share a birthplace and a decade. Geoffrey Kent and his parents started Abercrombie & Kent in Nairobi in 1962; Felix Pinto, a Kenyan farmer, and Jane Pinto founded Micato in 1966. From there they diverged. A&K became a global company with more than 55 local offices, more than 100 countries, its own Sanctuary Retreats lodges and river boats, and since 2019 a majority owner in Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio's Heritage Group. Micato stayed a family company with one product, the hosted safari, and one extension, India.

That is the whole comparison in miniature. A Micato trip is orchestrated end to end by one company that owns nothing and selects everything; an A&K safari sits inside a group that owns some of the camps it sells and runs offices on the ground almost everywhere. The specialist vs booking direct page sets out why the lodge rate is the same on either, and why what you are paying for differs.

Which is more expensive, Micato or Abercrombie & Kent?

Micato, by a wide margin on the one pairing that can be sourced. Micato's Heart of Kenya & Tanzania is USD 25,000 per person for 12 days in 2026; Abercrombie & Kent's Kenya & Tanzania Wildlife Safari, a 12-day small-group journey, was listed at USD 13,495 per person for 2025. That is about USD 2,080 a day against USD 1,125, before international flights on both. The earlier version of this page put Micato at USD 1,500–2,000 and A&K at USD 1,200–1,900 per person per day without a source; those ranges are withdrawn.

Read 7 September 2026. Per-day figures are this site's arithmetic. The A&K figure is a 2025 departure on a reseller's page because A&K's own site could not be read for this review; treat it as indicative of the small-group tier and confirm the 2026 price with A&K. Micato's price includes internal flights, park fees, a Safari Director and gratuities; A&K's inclusions on the listing are meals, lodges, drives, transfers and a Tour Director. Neither includes international flights.

The gap is not all margin. Micato's price carries the Safari Director's travel, internal and regional flights, park and conservancy fees and tips; A&K's small-group journeys run up to eighteen guests with a Tour Director, and the camps are a tier apart on some nights. Line the two up on the what a safari costs by budget ladder and the A&K figure sits at the premium tier with fees and flights added, and the Micato figure at the ultra tier fully loaded. For the fee lines neither can change, the Kenya and Tanzania cost pages; for twelve operators on one price ladder, the operator price comparison.

Which has the better reviews?

Micato: 751 Google reviews at 5.0 with the newest on 3 September 2026, 805 of 813 aggregated reviews five-star, scoring 88/100 on this site's review evidence index. Abercrombie & Kent has a comparable count, 780 on Trustpilot at 4.4 with the newest on 22 August 2026, but 11% are one-star, it answers 83% of them, and it has no qualifying second platform, so it scores 69.

The content of the reviews matters more than the decimals. Micato's praise names the Safari Director and the absence of any transaction during the trip. A&K's one-star reviews are, in the main, about refunds, cancellations and transfers, which is what a company running 100 countries at scale accumulates; its camp reviews are strong. If you are considering A&K, read its newest ten one-star reviews and its replies before deciding; the how to verify a safari operator page has the rest of the check.

Awards, dated where they can be

Abercrombie & Kent won World's Leading Luxury Safari Company at the 2025 World Travel Awards, with Micato among the nominees. Micato describes itself as a ten-time #1 in Travel + Leisure's World's Best Safari Outfitters but publishes no years, and neither company appears on Travel + Leisure's 2025 list. On dated credentials, Micato scores 10 and A&K 3 on this site's award index; Micato's Virtuoso Luminary Award (2024) and Condé Nast Traveler World Savers listings make the difference.

A World Travel Awards title is decided by an industry and consumer vote from a shortlist that is partly self-entered; a Travel + Leisure ranking by a reader survey with a published sample. The safari award and credentials index weights each accordingly and links to the awarding bodies; both companies' rows are there. A&K's own awards page returned no content when checked, so only the awarding body's record is scored, which is why its number is low rather than because it lacks recognition.

Who owns each, and what each owns

Micato is owned by the Pinto family and owns no lodges. Abercrombie & Kent has been 85% owned by Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio's Heritage Group since 2019, with founder Geoffrey Kent holding 15% as co-chairman, and it owns Sanctuary Retreats, a portfolio of safari camps and river boats including Olonana in the Maasai Mara and Chief's Camp in the Okavango Delta.

Ownership shapes the trip. Because Micato owns nothing, a Micato itinerary can put you in whichever camp suits the month, from a Singita lodge to a seasonal migration camp, and its interest is in the whole chain working. Because A&K owns Sanctuary Retreats, an A&K itinerary in the Mara or the Delta will often route through its own camps; that is not a fault, Sanctuary's camps are good, but it is an incentive to know about, and the Sanctuary Retreats review scores those camps on their own merits. For the same question at the lodge-owner end of the market, the Singita review.

A&K's 2019 change of control is documented in the buyers' own announcements: Heritage Group and Geoffrey Kent agreed in February 2019 to acquire 100% of the Abercrombie & Kent Group of Companies S.A., Heritage taking 85%, and Amerigo Perasso, formerly of Silversea, was appointed chief executive that August. Micato's About page names its founders and its address, and its non-profit arm AmericaShare is a separately constituted charity in Nairobi.

Both, to different degrees. Micato runs India (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Rajasthan, Mumbai, Varanasi) alongside eight African countries.
