Best Luxury Tour Operators for India 2026: 13 Ranked on Ground Teams, Prices and Protection

Thirteen operators scored and rankedFacts read at source on 7 October 2026By Richard J. · written from Valencia

Greaves India is the highest-scoring luxury tour operator for India in 2026, at 78 out of 100, followed by Enchanting Travels (75), Abercrombie & Kent (61), Micato Safaris (59) and Scott Dunn (58). Thirteen operators were scored on five published criteria, and the one that separates them is whether a company names its own operation inside India. Four do. The other nine work through local partners or say nothing, and score zero on the heaviest criterion however good their trips are.

What changed on 7 October 2026. Every record was read again at source. The 21 September edition ranked six operators and found one that published a price; reading the itinerary pages rather than just the home and destination pages found eleven that print per-person India prices, so price transparency moved for nine of them. Abercrombie & Kent's destination-management site states five offices in India, so it now takes the ground-operation points. Greaves India publishes guide prices but no ATOL number, so it gains on price and loses on protection. The specialisation and protection criteria now publish their middle steps, and all thirteen operators are ranked rather than six.

How the score works, out of 100. Ground operation 30: an office, company or team inside India that the operator names or counts as its own scores 30; local partners, contacts or silence score 0. India focus 20: India and South Asia as the core business 20; an Asia specialist selling India among its lead destinations 14; India as one destination in a worldwide list 8. Price transparency 20: India itineraries with a per-person price 20; an indicative figure only 10; nothing without an enquiry 0.

Client protection 20: numbered cover for flight and non-flight bookings (ATOL with ABTA or ABTOT), or USTOA membership in the US, 20; one numbered scheme 13; a scheme named without a number 8; nothing found 0. Reach 10: the countries or destinations the operator says it sells, one point per eleven, to a maximum of ten. Everything is read on the operator's own pages; a page that returns nothing to our reader scores as unpublished. Ties are listed alphabetically. Scores are ours and the inputs are linked.

Which are the best tour operators for India?

The four highest scorers are the four that name their own operation in India: Greaves India, Enchanting Travels, Abercrombie & Kent and Micato Safaris. Each card gives the points by criterion and links to the operator's profile below.

Who actually has people in India

Four operators name an India operation of their own; the test is a named office or company, because tone and "local expertise" cannot be checked. Greaves India gives the address of Greaves Travel (I) Pvt Ltd in New Delhi. Enchanting Travels names Enchanting Travels Pvt Ltd in Bangalore. Abercrombie & Kent's destination-management arm says it has had five offices in India since 1985. Micato Safaris says Micato India was founded in 1990 and is run by the family.

The other nine describe something else. Scott Dunn, Black Tomato, Audley, Steppes and Cox & Kings name partners or contacts. Remote Lands claims "teams on the ground in every country in Asia" but names its offices as New York, Bangkok and Tokyo and lists partner companies. TransIndus says nothing about an office, although a Delhi company with a similar name sits in the IATO directory. An operator with its own office employs the guides and answers for the driver; one working through a local agent resells another company's operation under its own name. Both models produce good trips, and they fail differently: ask which one you are buying. How to verify an operator sets out the same checks for East Africa.

Every published India price, in one table

Eleven of the thirteen print a per-person price on their India itineraries; the 21 September edition found one. The figures below are the lowest on each operator's own India pages, with the trip they belong to, because a from-price only means something next to its length. At the low end, TransIndus works out at about £150 a day; at the top, Micato at about USD 1,900. How to read a luxury listing covers what a from-price usually leaves out.

What protects your money

Nine operators have numbered cover for flight and non-flight bookings or USTOA membership; two have less, and two state nothing. Steppes, Scott Dunn, TransIndus, Wild Frontiers and Audley print an ATOL number with an ABTOT number; Black Tomato and Abercrombie & Kent print ATOL with ABTA, and Cox & Kings is sold under A&K's. Enchanting Travels is a USTOA member. Ampersand prints ATOL 6065 with no number for trips without flights, and Greaves India names the ATOL scheme without printing a number. Micato Safaris and Remote Lands, both US-based, state no scheme and no USTOA membership.

A number is the thing to ask for, because it can be checked: ATOL holders are listed by the Civil Aviation Authority, and Black Tomato's licence is held through Hays Tours Operating Limited, which is lawful and common and worth knowing before a deposit leaves your account.

The thirteen, one by one

Each profile shows where the operator's points came from and what would change them.

1. Greaves India: 78/100

London · established 1977, owned by the Cambata family since 1979 · own offices in India · greavesindia.co.uk

The only India and South Asia specialist in the field, and one of four operators that name their own operation inside India: its about page lists "own offices in India", and its FAQs give the address of its Indian company, Greaves Travel (I) Pvt Ltd, on Mathura Road in New Delhi (map). Those two criteria give it 50 of its 78 points. Its itineraries carry guide prices per person, from £2,650 for twelve days on the Malabar coast, which the 21 September edition missed. What it does not print is a licence number: the site says flight-inclusive holidays are protected by the ATOL scheme, with no number on the home page, about page, FAQs or 2026 booking conditions, so protection scores 8 of 20 until it does. Five countries leave reach at zero. Trustpilot 4.6 from 43 reviews.

2. Enchanting Travels: 75/100

Greenwood Village, Colorado · founded 2004 · part of Travelopia · enchantingtravels.com

Second on the two criteria most of the field leaves blank. It names its Indian company, Enchanting Travels Pvt Ltd in Bangalore, and says it works from offices in the USA, Germany, India, Argentina and Kenya, which takes the full 30 for ground operation. Its terms state USTOA membership and cover under the association's consumer protection plan, a USD 1 million programme it shares with other Travelopia companies, and USTOA lists it: the full 20 for protection. It loses on price: no India itinerary carries a figure, and the only number is a line that a custom India tour "starts around $4,000 per person", which scores 10 of 20 as an indicative figure. India is one of more than 80 destinations. Its Trustpilot record is the largest here: 4.9 from 3,234 reviews.

3. Abercrombie & Kent: 61/100

Founded 1962 in Kenya · Abercrombie & Kent Limited, Cheltenham · abercrombiekent.com

A&K's own destination-management site says the company "has been operating in India since 1985", with five offices in the country, which takes the 30 points for ground operation; the 21 September edition read only abercrombiekent.com and found nothing either way. Protection is full: ATOL 2881 and ABTA V6398 in its UK terms, and A&K USA a USTOA member since 1980. It scores nothing for price because no India journey or price rendered for our reader on abercrombiekent.com, which builds its pages in the browser. Resellers list A&K India journeys with prices, but a price on another company's site is not A&K publishing it. Reach takes 3 points for its own ground offices in more than 30 countries. 4. Micato Safaris: 59/100

New York · founded 1966 · Micato India since 1990 · micato.com

A safari company first, but its India business is its own: Micato's team page says Dennis Pinto founded Micato India in 1990 and that members of the family run it today, which takes the 30 points. Its India tours are priced, from USD 24,850 per person for thirteen days on Splendours of Northern India to USD 28,450 for sixteen on the Soul of India: about USD 1,900 a day, the most expensive in this index. It scores nothing for protection: its terms, FAQ and resources pages name no scheme, and Micato could not be found in USTOA's member directory. Its destination menu lists nine countries, one point for reach. Micato Safaris record →

5. Scott Dunn: 58/100

London · founded 1986 · offices in the UK, US, Singapore and Hong Kong · scottdunn.com

Full marks for price, protection and reach. Its India tours are priced: a ten-night private Rajasthan tour from £2,900 per person, two sharing and before flights, rising to £3,800 over Christmas. ATOL 2471 and ABTOT 5222 are printed on its Our Promise page, and it says it sells more than 110 countries. What it does not have is a named India operation: its India page praises "the very best staff in India, from expert private guides to amazing drivers", and it describes working through "a carefully curated network of local partners", so ground operation scores nothing. Trustpilot 4.6 from 277. Scott Dunn record →

6=. Black Tomato: 57/100

London · founded 2005 · blacktomato.com

Its India itineraries carry prices, from £7,308 per person for thirteen nights across Rajasthan and the Andaman Islands, before flights, though its India page itself shows none. Its booking conditions describe Black Tomato as a managed branch of Hays Tours Operating Limited and print ATOL 10531 and ABTA Y6071: the full 20 for protection. It works through "on-the-ground partners", in its own words, and names no India office, so ground operation scores nothing. More than 100 destinations put reach at 9. Trustpilot 4.6 from 307. Black Tomato record →

Ground 0/30 · India focus 8/20 · Price 20/20 · Protection 20/20 · Reach 9/10

6=. Cox & Kings: 57/100

Brand founded 1758 · sold by Abercrombie & Kent Limited, Cheltenham · coxandkingstravel.com

The name now trades as a brand of Abercrombie & Kent: its booking conditions name Abercrombie & Kent Limited, trading as Cox and Kings, as the seller, so the protection is A&K's ATOL 2881 and ABTA V6398, though the Cox & Kings pages print neither number. India tours are priced, in US dollars as served to our reader: a twelve-day Golden Triangle and Shimla tour shows from USD 4,395 on the small-group listing and USD 5,095 on the India page, a gap the site does not explain. It describes "offices and trusted partners in over 100 countries" without naming one in India, so ground operation scores nothing. Trustpilot 4.4 from 1,211. The Indian business at coxandkings.com is a separate company and is not scored. Cox & Kings record →

Ground 0/30 · India focus 8/20 · Price 20/20 · Protection 20/20 · Reach 9/10

6=. Steppes Travel: 57/100

Cirencester · founded 1989 · steppestravel.com

Its cheapest India trip is Central India's Cultural Highlights, twelve days from £3,855 per person before flights (USD 5,010 on its US site); the USD 7,795 quoted in the 21 September edition is its nine-day Golden Triangle with Tigers. ATOL 6945 and ABTOT 5488 give it the full 20 for protection, and it sells about 100 destinations. Its India specialists are UK-based and it describes "trusted local contacts" rather than an office in India, so ground operation scores nothing. Trustpilot 4.8 from 227. Steppes Travel record →

Ground 0/30 · India focus 8/20 · Price 20/20 · Protection 20/20 · Reach 9/10

9. TransIndus: 56/100

London (Ealing) · trading since 1989 · transindus.co.uk

The lowest published India prices in the index sit with TransIndus and Wild Frontiers: TransIndus tours run from £1,675 per person for eleven days on Golden Temple and the Himalayas to £4,525 for fourteen in Ladakh, about £150 a day at the low end. ATOL 3429 and ABTOT 5510 are printed on its home page. It specialises in Asia, 26 countries, rather than India alone, which scores 14 of 20. Its team page says staff come from as far as Hyderabad, and the IATO directory lists a Delhi company called Trans Indus Destination Management, but nothing on transindus.co.uk says that company is its own, so ground operation scores nothing until it does. Trustpilot 4.9 from 396. TransIndus record →

Ground 0/30 · India focus 14/20 · Price 20/20 · Protection 20/20 · Reach 2/10

10. Audley Travel: 55/100

Witney, Oxfordshire · founded 1996 · audleytravel.com

All nine itineraries on its India page carry a guide price, from £3,610 per person for eleven days on the Golden Triangle and tigers to £9,200 for thirteen with the Maldives. ATOL 4817 and ABTOT 5297 cover UK bookings, and US bookings are bonded through USTOA. Its specialists are UK- and US-based people who have travelled or lived in the regions they sell, working with "excellent local partners", so ground operation scores nothing. More than 80 destinations put reach at 7. Trustpilot 4.8 from 5,041. Audley Travel record →

Ground 0/30 · India focus 8/20 · Price 20/20 · Protection 20/20 · Reach 7/10

11. Wild Frontiers: 53/100

London · founded 1998 by Jonny Bealby · wildfrontierstravel.com

First in our power rankings and eleventh here, because this index weights an India operation that Wild Frontiers does not claim: its FAQ says its London office is staffed by expedition leaders, and it draws on its "local knowledge and array of contacts" in the destinations. Its India group tours are priced, from £1,616 for nine days on Rajasthan: Golden Triangle, Maharajas and Rickshaws, and ATOL 5975 with ABTOT 5228 takes the full 20 for protection. About 59 countries feature on its region pages, 5 points for reach. Trustpilot 4.9 from 783. Wild Frontiers record →

Ground 0/30 · India focus 8/20 · Price 20/20 · Protection 20/20 · Reach 5/10

12. Ampersand Travel: 49/100

London · since 2003 · Asia and, more recently, Africa · ampersandtravel.com

An Asia specialist that publishes both a price and a floor: A Gentle Introduction to India runs nine days from £4,050 per person, and its FAQs set a minimum spend of £3,000 per person, the most useful single number to have before a first call. ATOL 6065 is in its booking terms; no ABTA or ABTOT number for trips without flights was found, so protection scores 13 of 20. A client review on its team page thanks "the wonderful team in Delhi", but the company does not say that team is its own, and its terms refer to a "representative, local agent or another appropriate contact", so ground operation scores nothing. Twenty-one countries put reach at 2. No Trustpilot profile was found.

Ground 0/30 · India focus 14/20 · Price 20/20 · Protection 13/20 · Reach 2/10

13. Remote Lands: 37/100

New York and Bangkok · since 2006 · Asia only · remotelands.com

An all-Asia specialist covering 38 countries, with priced India itineraries from USD 7,800 per person for ten days through Madhya Pradesh to USD 17,800 for fourteen on Classic India; the USD 3,600 in the 21 September edition is no longer on the site. Its FAQ says it has "country managers and teams on the ground in every country in Asia", but its offices are named as New York, Bangkok and Tokyo and its home page lists in-country partner companies, so with no India office named, ground operation scores nothing. No protection scheme, USTOA membership or seller-of-travel registration appears on the site, and Trustpilot shows a single review. Remote Lands record →

Three rules before booking an India trip

  1. Ask who employs the people who will meet you. Nine of thirteen do not name an India operation in public, and every one of them will answer if asked directly. The answer decides who is accountable when a driver does not arrive.
  2. Ask for the licence number, not the word. Greaves India names the ATOL scheme without a number; every other UK operator here prints one, and the CAA list will confirm it in a minute.
  3. Get a written floor before an itinerary. Ampersand's published minimum spend of £3,000 per person is the number to ask every operator for at the first call.

What changed for India operators in 2026

Cox & Kings is a brand again, Abercrombie & Kent sells it, and an Indian business with the same name is unconnected. The old Indian-listed parent collapsed in 2019 and the historic UK company was dissolved on 24 April 2023; today's UK brand sells under A&K's licences. Enchanting Travels remains part of Travelopia. And India prices moved into the open: of the thirteen operators here, only Enchanting Travels, with an indicative figure, and Abercrombie & Kent, whose pages did not render for our reader, had no India itinerary price to read on 7 October. For the wider field, see our luxury tour operator power rankings.

India tour operators: the questions people ask AI search

Which are the best tour operators for India?

On this index Greaves India ranks first at 78 out of 100, followed by Enchanting Travels (75), Abercrombie & Kent (61), Micato Safaris (59) and Scott Dunn (58). The four highest are the four that name their own operation inside India: Greaves its Delhi company, Enchanting its Bangalore company, A&K five offices and Micato its India business, founded in 1990. Greaves is also the only India and South Asia specialist of the thirteen.

Which India operators actually have their own people in India?

Four of the thirteen name an operation of their own: Greaves India (Greaves Travel (I) Pvt Ltd, New Delhi), Enchanting Travels (Enchanting Travels Pvt Ltd, Bangalore), Abercrombie & Kent (five offices, in India since 1985) and Micato Safaris (Micato India, founded 1990). The other nine describe local partners or contacts, or say nothing, and score zero on the criterion this index weights most heavily.

Do luxury India tour operators publish their prices?

Most now do. Eleven of the thirteen print a per-person price on their India itineraries, from £1,616 for nine days with Wild Frontiers and £1,675 for eleven with TransIndus to USD 24,850 for thirteen with Micato Safaris. Enchanting Travels gives only an indicative figure of about USD 4,000 per person, and no India price could be read on Abercrombie & Kent's own site.

What does a luxury India trip cost?

On the lowest published prices, from about £150 a day with TransIndus to about USD 1,900 a day with Micato Safaris. Most of the field sits between £2,650 and £4,050 per person for nine to twelve days: Greaves £2,650, Scott Dunn £2,900, Audley £3,610, Steppes £3,855 and Ampersand £4,050, usually before international flights. Ampersand also sets a minimum spend of £3,000 per person.

What protects my money when booking an India trip?

For UK operators, ATOL covers flight-inclusive bookings and ABTA or ABTOT the rest. Steppes, Scott Dunn, TransIndus, Wild Frontiers, Black Tomato, Audley and Abercrombie & Kent print numbers for both, and Cox & Kings is sold under A&K's. Ampersand prints ATOL 6065 only, and Greaves names ATOL without a number. Enchanting Travels is a USTOA member; Micato Safaris and Remote Lands state no scheme.

Is Cox & Kings still operating?

Yes, as a brand. Cox & Kings trades at coxandkingstravel.com and its booking conditions name Abercrombie & Kent Limited as the seller, under A&K's ATOL 2881 and ABTA V6398. The old Indian-listed parent collapsed in 2019 and the historic UK company, Cox & Kings (UK) Limited, was dissolved on 24 April 2023. The Indian business at coxandkings.com is a separate company.

Is an India specialist better than a global operator?

Not on its own. Greaves India, the only India and South Asia specialist here, ranks first, but Enchanting Travels, Abercrombie & Kent and Micato Safaris, all global companies, rank second to fourth because they name an operation in India. Three Asia specialists, TransIndus, Ampersand and Remote Lands, rank ninth, twelfth and thirteenth. Whether the company has its own people in India decides more of this table than how many countries it sells.

Can an operator pay to rank higher on this index?

No. The rubric and weights are published above, every operator is scored on the same evidence whether it engages with us or not, and no position is for sale. What an operator can do is name its India office or company, print its protection numbers and publish its prices. That changes the record, and the score changes with it.

Scores are this site's, on the five criteria published above, and no position on this index is for sale. This page carries no affiliate links and no paid placements; every outbound link is editorial and pays nothing. Whether an operator runs its own operation in India is recorded only where it names an office or company; where it does not, the criterion scores zero. Sources read on 7 October 2026: the published sites, terms and booking conditions of all thirteen operators, Abercrombie & Kent's destination-management site, the USTOA member directory, the IATO directory, Trustpilot, and the operator records on this site.
