One country: buy that country's plan. Several countries on a fixed data budget: Nomad eSIM's 35-country plan, 10 GB for $23 with the UK included and its networks named. The widest list: Airalo's Eurolink, 41 countries for $31, Turkey included; Nomad eSIM covers Turkey on its separate 36-country plan or a Turkey plan, not on the 35-country plan quoted here. Heavy data on one phone: Holafly. Security extras: Saily. Prices in USD, read on the providers' plan pages in September 2026.

Shortcut: a single country, buy a local plan; the UK plus Schengen on a budget, Nomad eSIM 10 GB $23; an itinerary that touches a country outside Nomad eSIM's 35, Airalo Eurolink $31, or for Turkey Nomad eSIM's 36-country plan or a Turkey plan, not the 35; streaming all day on one phone, Holafly unlimited; the ad blocker and a US number, Saily. Ubigi's $15 plan is compared on the main comparison, where its Europe figure is dated.
The split is simple: Nomad eSIM for the UK plus Schengen on a fixed plan with named networks and a free trial, Airalo Eurolink for 41-country breadth, Holafly only for heavy data on one phone, and Saily for its security extras. Every regional plan here includes the UK, so the old "EU-only" objection to travel eSIMs no longer applies; what separates them is the price of 10 GB, which plan carries Turkey (Airalo's and Saily's do; Nomad eSIM's 36-country plan does, its 35-country plan quoted here does not), and what "unlimited" means once the daily allowance is spent.
| Plan | Countries | Turkey | 10 GB, 30 days | Unlimited |

| Saily Europe | 35, with the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland | Yes | $35.99 | 15 days $49.99; 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps; unlimited hotspot |
| Holafly Europe | 33, with the UK; check the list for Switzerland, Norway and Iceland | Check the list | No fixed plan | 15 days $50.50; threshold not published (fair-use slowdown "for no more than one day"); hotspot 1 GB a day |
| A local plan (one country) | One; an EU plan also roams in the EU, a UK plan covers only the UK | No | Varies (Airalo Italy 5 GB: $8 to $12, July 2026) | Varies by country |
Regional Europe plans, USD, read on the providers' plan pages: Nomad eSIM from its price list of 10 September 2026; Airalo, Saily and Holafly in September 2026. Sale prices (Nomad eSIM 20 GB $27 against a $37 list, 50 GB $35 against $48) expire without notice. Ubigi's Europe bundle could not be re-verified at source on 24 September, so it appears only on the main comparison, where it is dated.
Buy a local plan when you are visiting one country; buy a regional plan the moment your route crosses into a second, and choose the regional plan by its country list. A local plan for France, Italy, Spain or Germany connects to one or two strong domestic networks at the best price per gigabyte, and a plan issued for an EU country roams across the EU under the bloc's rules, within fair-use limits that some plans apply after extended roaming. That roaming does not reach the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Turkey, and those five are on most European itineraries. Any route that includes London, Zurich, Oslo, Reykjavik or Istanbul alongside the continent needs a regional plan or several separate eSIMs; the regional plan is cleaner.
The second question is what happens after the allowance. Airalo publishes 3 GB a day at full speed then 1 Mbps on its unlimited plans, Saily the same, Nomad eSIM 2 GB a day then 1 Mbps on its Europe plan; Holafly publishes no threshold and describes a fair-use slowdown "for no more than one day", with hotspot sharing capped at 1 GB a day. For a normal tourist a 10 GB fixed plan is the better buy than any of them, which is where the price column decides it.
Nomad eSIM's Europe plan covers 35 countries, the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland among them, at $23 for 10 GB over 30 days, and it names its networks in the four countries most travellers spend the most time in. The list, as the plan page gives it: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Vatican City; Turkey and the Faroe Islands are outside it. Nomad eSIM sells two Europe plans: the 35-country plan quoted here (Gibraltar and San Marino in; Turkey out) and a 36-country plan that adds Turkey, the Canary Islands and Northern Cyprus and drops Gibraltar and San Marino, priced separately on the plan page.
Prices, USD, from Nomad eSIM's Europe plan page and its price list of 10 September 2026: 1 GB for 7 days $5.50; 3 GB for 30 days $12; 5 GB $17.50; 10 GB $23; 20 GB $27 (sale, list $37); 50 GB $35 (sale, list $48); unlimited 5 days $19 or 10 days $34. The unlimited plans give 2 GB a day at full speed and 1 Mbps after that until the allowance resets 24 hours from activation; a hotspot draws on the same 2 GB, and unlimited plans are non-refundable, so they suit a short trip with fixed dates and nothing else. Fixed-data plans can be refunded within 30 days of purchase under its Nomad eSIM refund policy, provided the eSIM is still on the phone.
Networks. In the UK, Three (Hutchison), O2 and Vodafone; in Spain, Movistar and Orange; in Italy, Iliad and Vodafone; in France, Free Mobile and Orange, as confirmed by Nomad eSIM on 17 September 2026. Crossing a border, the regional plan connects to a supported network in the next country by itself; where a connection is weak or unstable, the company documents Nomad eSIM's guide to selecting a network manually in the phone's settings, which is the troubleshooting step few rivals document.
Try it first. Eligible new users get 1 GB for 3 days at no charge, with no card, redeemed in the app in an eligible destination; in Europe the ones Nomad eSIM has named are the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, and the app shows the rest. Hotspot works on the trial, so it doubles as a test of your phone and of coverage where you are before you pay: claim the Nomad eSIM free trial.
Nomad Pass, a Europe subscription: $3 per 30 days, auto-renewing, with 1 GB refreshed on the same eSIM each cycle and 15 per cent off eligible Europe data add-ons; it cancels without a fee, is for registered users and is non-refundable. It is not a 10 GB plan and not a one-off fee; it is a subscription that keeps an eSIM live between trips. It suits repeat European travellers and light-data users on a single trip; compare the recurring fee plus add-on prices with a one-off prepaid plan before choosing. Nomad eSIM Europe plans and Nomad Pass. One planning rule for any Nomad eSIM plan: it activates on first connection or automatically 60 days after purchase, so buy inside 60 days of departure and size the plan for the whole trip. Validity cannot be extended, but an eligible add-on bought before or after expiry activates when the plan ends and keeps the same eSIM in service; leftover data does not roll over.
Since Brexit, British networks sit outside EU roaming rules, so an EU local plan stops working the way you expect the moment it crosses the Channel; every regional plan compared here includes the UK, which settles it. UK operators are not bound by the EU's roaming price caps, and a local plan bought for an EU country will not roam into the UK as it roams inside the bloc. UK-based travellers visiting the continent, and continental visitors to London or Edinburgh, get both legs on one plan from Nomad eSIM (35 countries, $23 for 10 GB), the Airalo Eurolink (41 countries, $31), Saily (35, $35.99) or Holafly (33, unlimited only). Within the UK Nomad eSIM runs on Three, O2 and Vodafone; Airalo's UK page names EE; Saily and Holafly do not name their UK networks on the regional plan page.
Turkey is the line to check between the two cheapest fixed plans: Airalo's Eurolink includes it, and Nomad eSIM includes it on its 36-country Europe plan but not on the 35-country plan priced here. Saily's Europe plan includes Turkey too; Holafly's 33-country list should be checked before relying on it. Nomad eSIM's 36-country plan adds Turkey, the Canary Islands and Northern Cyprus and drops Gibraltar and San Marino, so a route that needs both Gibraltar and Istanbul does not fit either plan alone; its price sits on the plan page. Airalo's 41 run beyond Nomad eSIM's lists into the western Balkans and eastern Europe; its full list loads on the plan page, so check it for any country not in the 35 above. Whichever Nomad eSIM plan carries Turkey, one rule applies: buy and install it before you arrive, because a Nomad eSIM cannot be bought or installed once you are on Turkish networks, and a plan installed beforehand can be topped up in-country, according to the company.
A week in one European city runs on 2 to 3 GB; a multi-country rail or driving trip with more navigation and less hotel Wi-Fi runs on 4 to 6 GB a week. Hotels, restaurants and cafes across France, Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK provide reliable Wi-Fi, so European trips need less mobile data than comparable trips to Asia or Africa. In Nomad eSIM's plan sizes that is 5 GB for $17.50 for a week, 10 GB for $23 for two to three weeks, and 20 GB for $27 (sale) if you stream in the evenings, since a single Netflix evening on mobile data adds about 1 to 3 GB depending on resolution. The Eurolink's 10 GB covers the same trips at $31. The data estimator sizes it by habit.
On the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express any of the four regional plans is adequate; the Paris to Istanbul route needs Turkey on the list, which means Airalo, Saily or Nomad eSIM's 36-country plan. Coverage is excellent through France, Switzerland and Austria and intermittent in tunnels and some Alpine sections, and the historic cabins have no Wi-Fi: you will have data during the scenery and lose it briefly in the Mont Cenis or Simplon tunnels. The Royal Scotsman stays inside the UK, so every plan here covers it, and Nomad eSIM's named UK networks are a small advantage in the Highlands, where being able to pick the operator manually can matter. The full route breakdown is in the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express guide.
Nomad eSIM for the UK plus Schengen on a fixed plan, with its 36-country plan when Turkey is on the route; Airalo's Eurolink when a Balkan stop is. Price the exact plan before you buy: sale prices change and unlimited plans are non-refundable at Nomad eSIM.

Yes. Turkey is on Airalo's 41-country Europe list. Nomad eSIM's 35-country Europe plan does not include Turkey; its 36-country Europe plan and its Turkey plans do, and any of them must be bought and installed before you arrive, because Nomad eSIMs cannot be bought or installed once you are on Turkish networks. Some apps and services face intermittent restrictions in Turkey; a VPN installed before travel deals with most of that.
EU roaming rules apply to SIMs issued by EU operators to their own customers, which lets an EU local plan roam across the bloc within fair-use limits. A travel eSIM is a different product: a regional plan works in every country on its published list, EU or not, at the same price, which is why the four plans above all include the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, and why the list, not the roaming rules, is what to check.
Yes, for all four. Install at home on Wi-Fi and the plan connects when you land. Two deadlines matter: a Nomad eSIM plan activates when it first connects to a supported network, or automatically 60 days after purchase, and a Saily plan has a 180-day activation window, so do not buy months ahead without checking the window against your dates.
No. For 10 GB over 30 days Nomad eSIM charges $23 to the Eurolink's $31, and Ubigi $15 on the main comparison, where its Europe figure is dated. The Eurolink's case is the widest list, 41 countries including Turkey, and Airalo's 3 GB-a-day unlimited plans with unlimited hotspot. Choose by list first and price second.
No, provided the plan includes the UK: the Airalo Eurolink, Nomad eSIM's Europe plan, Saily's Europe plan and Holafly's all do. An EU local plan is the one that does not, because British networks sit outside EU roaming rules; a local plan bought for France or Italy will not cross the Channel the way it crosses the bloc.
Top up rather than buy a new eSIM. Airalo tops up in the app on most plans; Nomad eSIM sells add-ons on eligible plans: an add-on bought before or after the plan expires activates when it ends on the same eSIM, with no rollover of leftover data and no extension of the original validity, and Nomad Pass takes 15 per cent off eligible Europe add-ons. Top up while you still have a little data or Wi-Fi so the purchase completes before you hit zero.
All four regional plans here include the UK alongside the Schengen countries: Nomad eSIM (35 countries, $23 for 10 GB), Airalo Eurolink (41 countries, $31), Saily (35 countries, $35.99) and Holafly (33 countries, unlimited only). The differences are price, Turkey (Airalo and Saily include it; Nomad eSIM on its separate 36-country plan or a Turkey plan, not the 35-country plan) and the unlimited terms.
For a fixed-data trip inside its 35 countries, yes: 10 GB for $23, the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland included, networks named in the UK, Spain, Italy and France, manual network selection, a free 1 GB trial in the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, and Nomad Pass for repeat trips or light use. For Turkey, choose its 36-country plan rather than the 35, and note that its unlimited plans (2 GB a day, then 1 Mbps) are non-refundable. It scores 79 of 100 on our rubric, third of seven.
