Most travellers overbuy. For a typical week of maps, messaging and a bit of browsing on wifi at the hotel, 3 to 5 GB is plenty. Heavy users who stream and hotspot need more; light users need less. Here is a simple way to size it, what each band costs in real plans, and why topping up beats over-buying.

DATA FOR ONE WEEK ABROAD

Heavy · streaming, hotspot
Quick answer: for a one-week trip, light user 1 to 3 GB, normal user 3 to 5 GB, heavy user 10 GB and up. Rely on hotel and café wifi for big downloads and streaming, and your mobile data goes much further than you would think. When in doubt, buy a modest plan and top up.
Maps, messaging, the odd search and email. Mostly on wifi. A weekend or a careful week.
Maps, social, browsing, some photos and calls. The typical one-week traveller.
Streaming, video calls, hotspotting a laptop, few wifi breaks. Or a longer trip.
Translated into plans, a light week is a 1 to 3 GB plan, a normal week 5 GB, a heavy week 10 to 20 GB or a large fixed plan rather than unlimited. The worked example uses Nomad eSIM's Japan plans, USD from its price list of 10 September 2026, because Japan 10 GB at $16 on sale is the lowest Japan 10 GB price on the comparison; the same bands map to its Europe and USA plans. Bands are indicative, not a promise that a plan will last a particular trip: hotspot and video draw on the same allowance, and a sale price expires without notice.
| Your band | Nomad eSIM Japan plan | Europe and USA equivalents |
|---|---|---|
| Light, 1 to 3 GB | Nomad eSIM Japan 1 GB for 7 days, $4, or 3 GB for 30 days, $7 Partner | Europe 1 GB for 7 days $5.50, 3 GB $12; USA 1 GB for 7 days $5, 3 GB $10 |
| Normal, 3 to 5 GB | 5 GB for 30 days, $10 | Europe 5 GB $17.50; USA 5 GB $16 |
| Heavy, 10 GB and up | 10 GB $16 (sale, list $18) or 20 GB $23 (sale, list $26); unlimited from 3 days $11, 2 GB a day at full speed, then reduced | Europe 10 GB $23, 20 GB $27 (sale, list $37); USA 10 GB $25, 20 GB $36 (sale, list $38), 50 GB $41 (sale, list $60) |
The gap between light and heavy is almost entirely video. Maps and messaging barely register; streaming and video calls dominate. Knowing the rough cost of each activity is the whole trick to sizing a plan.
| Activity | Rough data use | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Maps & navigation (1 hr) | 5 to 10 MB | Negligible |
| Messaging & email (per day) | 10 to 30 MB | Tiny |
| Social scrolling (1 hr) | 100 to 300 MB | Adds up |
| Music streaming (1 hr) | 70 to 150 MB | Moderate |
| Video streaming (1 hr) | 0.7 to 3 GB | The big spender |
| Video call (1 hr) | 0.5 to 1.5 GB | Heavy |

The single most useful habit is to buy for your realistic usage, not your worst-case fear. Because you can top up the same eSIM in-app in seconds, running low is a minor inconvenience, not a crisis, whereas over-buying a large plan you never finish is money left on the table. Start at the "normal" band for a typical trip, lean on wifi for anything data-hungry, and add a top-up only if you need it. Two provider rules to know: Nomad eSIM sells add-ons on eligible plans, and an add-on bought before or after expiry activates when the plan ends on the same eSIM, though leftover data does not roll into it; and its free trial is a 1 GB test allowance for eligible new users (claim the Nomad eSIM trial), useful for checking your phone and the coverage, not a plan for the trip.
Two simple tactics stretch any plan: download maps, playlists and shows over hotel wifi before you head out, and keep streaming for when you are connected to wifi. Do that and even a light plan covers a surprisingly full trip. If you are travelling across several countries, a regional plan may size better than several single-country ones; our provider comparison covers which handle multi-country best.
New to all this? Start with how an eSIM works and how to install one, then size your data with the table above.
For a typical traveller using maps, messaging and some browsing, around 3 to 5 GB covers a week comfortably, especially if you use hotel or café wifi for streaming and big downloads. Light users can manage on 1 to 3 GB; heavy users who stream or hotspot should budget 10 GB or more. In Nomad eSIM's Japan plans that is 1 GB for $4, 5 GB for $10 or 10 GB for $16 (sale).
Video, by a wide margin. An hour of video streaming can use 0.7 to 3 GB and a video call 0.5 to 1.5 GB, while maps and messaging use only a few megabytes. If you keep streaming and video calls to wifi, your mobile data stretches much further.
On Nomad eSIM's Japan plans, from its price list of 10 September 2026: a light week fits 1 GB for 7 days at $4 or 3 GB at $7, a normal week 5 GB at $10, a heavy week 10 GB at $16 (sale, list $18) or 20 GB at $23 (sale, list $26). The same bands map to Europe (5 GB $17.50, 10 GB $23) and the USA (5 GB $16, 10 GB $25). Its data calculator turns your habits into a size, add-ons are available on eligible plans, and the free 1 GB trial is a test allowance, not a trip plan. Nomad eSIM is a paid partner of this site.
Usually not. Because you can top up the same eSIM in-app in seconds, it is cheaper to buy for realistic usage and add more only if needed than to buy a large plan you do not finish. Start modest and top up on demand, remembering that leftover data does not roll into a top-up on most providers.
Download maps, playlists and shows over wifi before going out, keep streaming and large downloads on wifi, and let apps update only on wifi. These habits alone can make a light plan cover a full trip.
Only if you stream or hotspot heavily with little wifi access, or you are on a long trip, and only once you know what "unlimited" means on that plan: Nomad eSIM gives 2 GB a day at full speed before reducing the speed (1 Mbps on its Europe and USA plans), Airalo 3 GB a day, and Holafly publishes no threshold. For most travellers a few gigabytes plus wifi is cheaper and sufficient.
If you are visiting several countries, a regional plan often works out simpler and better value than buying a separate single-country eSIM for each: Nomad eSIM's Europe 10 GB covers 35 countries for $23. Check which providers offer strong regional coverage for your route in our comparison guides.
