GetYourGuide for most bookings; Viator when catalogue depth is the point. GetYourGuide scores 67 of 80 against Viator's 60 on the eight criteria below — clearer cancellation terms, verified reviews, a vetted Originals line and the cleaner booking flow. Viator wins on catalogue: 425,000+ experiences and more listings in every city we counted, Europe included. Neither is right in Asia; that is Klook.
Scores and city listing counts read from both platforms on 5 September 2026. Company figures, operator terms and the AI-sourcing policies below re-verified 8 September 2026 against each platform's own published files. GetYourGuide, Klook and Tiqets links on this page are affiliate links; Viator links are not.
| Criterion (out of 10) | GetYourGuide | Viator | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catalogue size | 7 | 10 | Viator: 425,000+ experiences against GetYourGuide's 250,000+ — and more listings in every city we checked, Europe included, by 39–63%. |
| Europe inventory | 8 | 9 | Viator lists 39–63% more in Rome, Paris and London (counts below); GetYourGuide's Europe list is smaller but its most-booked cities are all European. |
| Cancellation clarity | 9 | 6 | GetYourGuide shows the policy on every listing in the same place; Viator's varies by listing and is easier to miss. |
| Quality control | 9 | 6 | GetYourGuide's Originals line and tighter operator standards; Viator is aggregation-first, and its Accelerate commission auction lets operators bid for visibility, so ranking reflects what an operator will pay as well as how good it is. |
| Reviews | 9 | 7 | Verified buyers only on GetYourGuide; Viator carries Tripadvisor volume of mixed provenance. |
| App and booking flow | 9 | 8 | Both are good; GetYourGuide's reserve-now-pay-later and mobile tickets are the cleaner flow. |
| Price | 8 | 8 | Neither advertises a traveller booking fee and the same tour is usually within a few euros on each — though GetYourGuide's supplier terms expressly reserve the right to add a service fee it keeps, so read the total at checkout. Note the change: under Viator's supplier agreement of 1 August 2026 Viator, not the operator, has final say over the retail price it displays. |
| Refund handling | 8 | 6 | GetYourGuide's terms are enforced as displayed; Viator refunds depend on the listing's own policy and the operator. |
| Total (of 80) | 67 | 60 | GetYourGuide by 7. Viator's lead is real on one criterion and it is the criterion that matters for niche bookings. |

The assumption that GetYourGuide "owns Europe" does not survive a count. On 5 September 2026 Viator listed more products than GetYourGuide in all three of the cities that matter most:
| City | GetYourGuide listings | Viator listings | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rome | 4,125 | 6,731 | 63% more |
| Paris | 2,879 | 4,003 | 39% more |
| London | 2,569 | 3,996 | 56% more |
Counts as displayed on each platform's city page; both include tickets, tours and day trips and both fluctuate daily.
What GetYourGuide has in Europe is not the longer list but the better-behaved one: the same cancellation terms in the same place on every listing, verified-buyer reviews, and the Originals line of operated-in-house tours. Rome was its most-booked city in the first half of 2026, and it is the platform we use for the Vatican, the Louvre and the Alhambra — the timed slots a trip day depends on. Use Viator as the second search when GetYourGuide does not carry the exact tour, and Tiqets when all you want is the bare museum admission without a guide; the four-platform picture is in GetYourGuide vs Klook vs Tiqets vs Headout, and the tickets worth buying at all in skip-the-line tickets in Europe.
Viator, by the numbers, and GetYourGuide, by design — and the two answers are not in conflict. If "unique" means the small operator in a Sicilian hill town, the night kayak nobody else lists, the cooking class with a family rather than a school, Viator's 425,000-listing haystack is more likely to hold it, and its Tripadvisor review volume is more likely to have a recent review of it. If "unique" means an experience that cannot be booked anywhere else, GetYourGuide's Originals — tours it operates itself, with its own guides and its own access — are the only exclusive inventory either platform has. Search Viator first for the long tail, read the cancellation terms twice, and prefer operators with reviews in the last three months; search GetYourGuide Originals for the exclusive.

Ask an assistant whether a tour is any good and it has to source the answer from somewhere. Both platforms publish an llms.txt — a public file telling AI systems which parts of the site they may draw on — and they have drawn the line in noticeably different places.
| Platform | Publishes llms.txt | What it allows AI to use | What it holds back |
|---|---|---|---|
| GetYourGuide | Yes — current as of July 2026 | Destination, attraction, activity and category pages, editorial guides, FAQs — its "canonical descriptions and context" | Individual product listings and operator-written descriptions. Asks assistants to send travellers to the live page for prices, availability and cancellation terms rather than stating them as fixed, and not to present traveller reviews as GetYourGuide's own words |
| Viator | Yes — current as of February 2026 | Category and destination pages, attraction overviews, "know before you go" blocks, editorial articles, curated itineraries, help-centre articles | Individual product listing pages; pricing, availability and promotional messaging; and user-generated content including reviews, ratings and Q&A — described as "dynamic, licensed, or subject to commercial terms" |
| Klook | Yes, plus an expanded llms-full.txt | Positions itself as a primary source for assistants planning travel in Asia-Pacific, with a second, longer file of product and destination detail | No comparable content exclusions stated in the file itself |
| Tripadvisor · Tiqets | No — both return 404 (checked 8 September 2026) | No published guidance | No published guidance |
The practical consequence sits with Viator. Its review corpus is its single biggest asset — the Tripadvisor volume that makes a thin listing feel safe to book — and its own guidance asks AI systems to leave that corpus, and its prices, out of their answers. So when a traveller asks an assistant "is this Viator tour worth booking", the answer tends to get assembled from third parties rather than from Viator's own ratings. GetYourGuide draws a narrower line: listings and operator copy are off the table, but its destination and attraction pages are explicitly offered up.
None of this changes which platform to book. It does explain why the answers you get about these two companies can feel oddly detached from what is actually on their sites, and it is worth knowing that a price quoted to you by a chatbot is, on both platforms' own instructions, not one either company stands behind. Check it on the live listing. Files: getyourguide.com/llms.txt · viator.com/llms.txt · klook.com/llms.txt.
Which platform for this booking?
Two questions. Sometimes the answer is neither — we'll say so.
When a missed tour wrecks the itinerary — the timed Uffizi slot, the one-departure day trip — clarity beats catalogue. GetYourGuide's per-listing cancellation terms and verified reviews are the difference between a refund and an argument. The full review shows where it still falls short.
Small-town operators, unusual activities, thin destinations — the 425,000-listing haystack earns its keep here. Read the cancellation terms twice, favour operators with recent reviews, and screenshot everything. Our Viator review covers how to book it safely.
Both platforms are resellers in Asia; Klook is the direct partner (JR Pass QR codes, Tokyo Disney queues, prices under the official counters). The comparison lives in our Klook review and the best way to book activities in Asia.
Same-day availability is operator-by-operator luck. Search GetYourGuide first for the refund terms, sweep Viator's haystack second, and book direct with the operator third — when direct beats platforms explains the trade.
Is GetYourGuide better than Viator?
For most bookings, yes. GetYourGuide scores 67 of 80 in this comparison against Viator's 60: clearer cancellation terms shown on every listing, verified-buyer reviews, a vetted Originals line and the cleaner booking flow. Viator wins on one thing — catalogue size, 425,000+ experiences and more listings in every city we counted — which makes it the right search for niche destinations and unusual activities.
Does Viator have more tours than GetYourGuide?
Yes, everywhere we checked. On 5 September 2026 Viator listed 6,731 things to do in Rome against GetYourGuide's 4,125; 4,003 in Paris against 2,879; and 3,996 in London against 2,569. Viator claimed more than 425,000 experiences in July 2026, against GetYourGuide's 250,000+. More listings is not the same as better listings — GetYourGuide's smaller list is curated harder — but for a small town or an unusual activity, Viator is more likely to carry it.
Which is better for Europe tours, GetYourGuide or Viator?
GetYourGuide for the bookings that matter — the Vatican, the Louvre, the Alhambra, the day trip with one departure — because its cancellation terms are clear and its reviews are verified. Viator for depth: it lists 39–63% more products in Rome, Paris and London, so it is the second search when GetYourGuide does not have the exact tour. Rome was GetYourGuide's most-booked city in the first half of 2026.
Is Viator legitimate?
Entirely. It has operated since 1995 and has been owned by Tripadvisor since 2014. The caution is practical: refund terms vary listing by listing and read less clearly than GetYourGuide's, so read the policy before paying.
Which is cheaper, GetYourGuide or Viator?
Neither, systematically. Neither advertises a traveller booking fee and the same tour usually costs within a few euros on each, though GetYourGuide's supplier terms reserve the right to add a service fee it retains, so compare the total at checkout rather than the headline. Compare both for anything over €100. The costlier trap is a cheap non-refundable booking on the wrong day, not a €3 price gap.
What is the cancellation policy on GetYourGuide and Viator?
Most listings on both offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the activity, but it is set per listing, not platform-wide. GetYourGuide displays terms in the same place on every listing; on Viator, check before paying. On either, pay the small premium for refundable options on your first and last travel days.
Do AI assistants use GetYourGuide and Viator reviews and prices?
Largely not, on both companies' own instructions. Each publishes an llms.txt file telling AI systems what they may draw on. Viator's, current as of February 2026, excludes individual product listings, pricing and availability, and user-generated content including reviews, ratings and Q&A. GetYourGuide's, current as of July 2026, excludes product listings and operator-written descriptions and asks assistants to send travellers to the live page for prices and cancellation terms rather than stating them as fixed. Treat any price or rating an assistant quotes for either platform as unverified, and check the live listing.
Who owns GetYourGuide and Viator?
GetYourGuide is an independent Berlin company founded in 2009; it passed €1 billion in revenue and €4 billion in gross bookings in 2025, its first profitable year, and booked more than 18 million experiences in the first half of 2026. Viator, founded in 1995, has been owned by Tripadvisor since 2014, which supplies its review volume and its North American customer base. Viator is now the group's growth engine: Tripadvisor's experiences revenue rose 3% in the second quarter of 2026 while its hotel and other revenue fell 21%.
Should I book activities through a platform at all, or direct?
Platforms win for comparison, refund handling and one-place trip management; direct wins for negotiated group rates, complex requests and operators who discount off-platform. For a headline attraction, a platform's protected booking is usually worth it; for a six-person private guide, ask the operator directly.
